CCM: "START/STOP FAILED": LOSS OF POWER

SITUATION
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is illuminated
Check Control Message (CCM) states "Auto Start/Stop function failed"
One or more of the following codes may be stored in the DME fault memory’
z

120408: "Charging pressure control: switching off as a subsequent reaction"

z

130F20: "Exhaust camshaft: angular offset to crankshaft outside of tolerance"

z

130E20: "Intake camshaft: angular offset to crankshaft outside of tolerance"

z

164040: "Intake camshaft: Installation faulty"

z

164041: "Exhaust camshaft: Installation faulty"

CAUSE
Incorrect camshafts timing position (in reference to crankshaft).
Combustions occurring just as engine is stopping, drive the engine backwards, dragging the belt
drive and toothed belt starter motor backwards. High-inertia torque loading on the camshaft
sprockets and crankshaft at this point causes slippage, unintentionally adjusting the timing.

CORRECTION
Adjust engine timing and recode and reprogram the vehicle.

PROCEDURE
For conditions that are similar to the situation described:
1. Run diagnosis with ISTA/D and work through the corresponding test module.
Are any of the fault codes, specified above, stored in the DME fault memory?
YES- adjust the engine timing as per REP 11 36 046” Removing and installing or replacing
intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters (N20)” then go to step 2.

NO – continue troubleshooting with ISTA.
2. Program and encode the complete vehicle using ISTA/P 3.60.2 (or ISTA NEXT 4.02.30) to
integration level F025-16-11-503 or higher.
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do
not have the latest software. For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to
CenterNet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger / power supply (SI B04 23 10).
A part exchange is not necessary and does not provide a solution.

Overlapping Labor – Other Repairs
If invoicing KSD2 flat rate labor operation codes for other repair work results in overlapping labor,
invoice work time (WT) labor operation 00 50 000 instead for the additional labor time needed
(FRUs minus the overlapping labor).

operation requires a separate punch time.
