VOLUNTARY EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN 16E-A05
- N26 ENGINE: REPLACE TURBOCHARGER OIL
SUPPLY LINE
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles the next
time the vehicle is in the shop.
This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI 11 17 16 dated October 2016

MODEL
F30 (328i Sedan and 328i xDrive Sedan)

SITUATION
Carbonization of the turbocharger sealing ring can cause the exhaust to smoke briefly during cold
start up.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Emissions Recall Campaign involves F30 vehicles with the N26 engine produced from
February 2012 to May 2013.
First check if a Recall Completion Label, SD 92-435 for this campaign is already attached to the
underside of the hood on the right (passenger) rear close to the windshield.
If the label is present, the Campaign has already been performed and no further action is
necessary.
Vehicles which require this Recall Campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked
either in AIR, the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key
Reader.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
After the vehicle has been checked and corrected,
obtain a label (SD 92-435) and with the indelible
marker provided, legibly print the Recall name, Recall
number, and dealer code (5 digits) on the “Emissions
Recall Campaign Completed Label” (see illustration).

For California centers only: It is required by the California Code of Regulations that an executed
orange "Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction" certificate (SD92-084, see illustration) be
provided to each customer (for vehicles registered in the state of California), once the Recall on his
or her vehicle has been completed.

PROCEDURE
1. Check the DCSnet Warranty Vehicle Inquiry for one of the following part numbers. If 11 42 8
648 368, 11 42 8 678 840 or 11 42 2 396 291 has already been installed during a previous
repair then take no further action and use labor operation 00 64 220 or 00 64 753 when
submitting your claim.
If neither of these part numbers are shown as being claimed prior in the vehicle’s DCSnet
Repair History (Claims) section, then proceed to step 2.
2. Replace the turbocharger oil supply per Repair Instruction 11 42 198 “Removing and
Installing exhaust turbocharger oil supply line (N26).”

Note one: Do not remove the entire exhaust system.

Support the exhaust system using a screw or transmission jack while you are removing the
exhaust turbocharger to gain access to the oil supply line.

Note two: Do not drain the engine oil.

Sublet reimbursement calculation for claiming the “used quantities” of repair-related bulk materials
(BMW part numbers) is at dealer net plus your center’s handling.
BMW Antifreeze/Coolant: Claim for the amount needed to replace what was drained with a “50/50
coolant/water solution” at dealer net plus handling (Bulk container reference P/N 82 14 1 467 704).
Enter this material cost in sublet and itemize the amount on the repair order and in claim comment
section.
Overlapping Labor – Other Repairs
When other repair work is being performed with this repair work and if claiming the corresponding
labor operations results in overlapping labor, invoice and claim work time labor operation 00 50
000 for the “additional time (FRU)” to perform the other repair instead (minus the overlap).
On the repair order and in the claim comment section, please identify the labor operations that
labor operation code 00 50 000 replaces and itemize the claimed FRU amount.
Work time labor operation code 00 50 000 is not considered a Main labor operation.
When work time labor operation 00 50 000 is used for work that will be claimed under a different
defect code, separate punch time(s) are required.
