THE DISPLAY GOES BLACK, VEHICLE DOESN’T START
AGAIN AFTER SWITCHING THE ENGINE OFF.

SITUATION



On board computer and navigation system goes black or resets.
The engine can only be switched off by pressing the START/STOP button three times (Emergency
STOP)



Various Check Control messages are displayed.



At a minimum the following fault code is present:

D91C86 - CAN message, status functional safety (ST_FSSY): Timeout-BDC


Additional fault messages may also be displayed

CAUSE
Software error in the central gateway of the Body Domain Controller (BDC) control unit.
Note: Parts replacement does NOT provide a solution!

CORRECTION
Reset the battery and program with ISTA/P 4.12.3x or higher.

PROCEDURE
Note: BEFORE programming, reset (disconnect/reconnect) the battery. Until ISTA/P 4.12.3x or
higher is available, resetting the battery is the only solution!

For conditions that are similar to the situation described:
1. Perform diagnosis with the latest version of ISTA.
2. Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 4.12.3x or higher.

Target integration level: I001-18-07-530 or higher
Target integration level: F025-18-07-530 or higher
Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the
latest software.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10 ).

Refer to KSD2/AIR for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also
includes programming and encoding the control units, the programming procedure may only be invoiced one
time.
Vehicle Programming and Coding
When ISTA/P automatically reprograms and codes all the vehicle’s control modules that currently do not have
the latest software, and if control module failures occur during this programming procedure:


Please claim this consequential control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this
bulletin with the applicable KSD2/AIR labor operations.

Control module failures that occurred prior to this programming procedure and/or additional work is performed
as a result of performing the ISTA diagnostics and related test plans:


When covered under an applicable limited warranty, claim the control module-related and/or other repair
work using the applicable defect code and labor operations in KSD2/AIR.
