Vehicles are equipped with:
IHKR (Integrated heating and air conditioning) or IHKA (automatic heater and A/C-control)
SITUATION
A musty odor is noticed coming from the heating and air conditioning system.
CAUSE
Certain environmental conditions may cause microbial contamination on the evaporator which can produce a
musty odor when the air conditioning system is used.
CORRECTION
Clean the evaporator.
PROCEDURE
For conditions that are similar to the situation described, the best option, if available, is to spray a disinfectant,
under high pressure, directly onto the evaporator:
1. Before any cleaning procedure is carried out, the following points should be taken into consideration:
• Inspect the microfilters and replace as necessary.
• Inspect the microfilter housing water drains for clogging and clean as necessary.
• Some vehicles have recirculating air filters that need to be inspected and replaced as necessary.
• Make sure the evaporator housing drains are not clogged.
• Verify the source of the odor. Other issues that may cause an odor are:
o Vehicle interior carpet may be soaked because of a water leak.
o Water may have leaked into the trunk.

o Other strong-smelling items may be in the vehicle interior or trunk.

Was a part number found for the Special tool required for application of the disinfectant directly onto
the evaporator of this model?
YES – using the tool specified, follow the REP “Clean the Evaporator” for this model found in ISTA.
NO – go to next step.
3. Vehicles without a specified spray lance can be cleaned with an ultrasonic cleaner from Wynn’s. Follow
the attached “Ultrasonic Evaporator Cleaning“ procedure.

ULTRASONIC EVAPORATOR CLEANING
Introduction or Preparatory Items:
If desired, clean the heating and air conditioning system using the Wynn's Aircomatic
Cleaning tool prior to proceeding with this procedure. Refer to SI B04 30 03 on information
on how to acquire the tool and the cleaning solutions. Or go BMW Center Solution from TIS:

Description
Aircomatic Ultrasonic Cleaner Set – Unit and fluid
Airco-Clean fluid
Airco-Clean Liquid (12 x 3.3 oz. case)
Safety Precautions
•
Always wear proper eye protection. The use of safety goggles or glasses, gloves and
shop coat is recommended.
•
Always set the vehicle's parking brake before any work is performed.
•
Before starting the engine, check to be sure that the vehicle's fan blades, pulleys,
belts and other moving parts are clear of any obstructions.
AIRCO-CLEAN A/C Treatment Application Procedure
1. Remove the vehicle’s cabin microfilter.
2. Start the vehicle.
3. Switch off the heating/air conditioning system.
4. Set the temperature control to the lowest temperature.
5. (For IHKA) Switch off the automatic air distribution/supply.
6. Set the blower to its lowest speed.
7. Set the ventilation to the upper body area.
8. Set the air supply to recirculated air mode.
9. Shake the bottle of "Airco-clean" well.
10. Turn the "Aircomatic“ system upside down and screw the bottle of "Airco-clean" into the unit,
holding the bottle upright.
11. Turn the evaporator cleaning system upright again so that the contents of the bottle partially
drains into it.
12. Set the evaporator cleaning system horizontally in the passenger-side footwell.
13. Connect the diffuser hose to the system.
14. Position the diffuser hose in such a way that the mist emitted is easily drawn into the
recirculation intake vent. The hose must not be kinked.
15. Plug in the evaporator cleaning system’s power cable. Spraying begins.
16. Close the vehicle's windows and doors as you exit the vehicle.
Note: Do not remain in the vehicle while the system is operating.
17. After about twenty minutes the treatment will complete and the unit will automatically shut off.

18. Open the doors and the windows to allow the vehicle to air for about five minutes.
19. Empty any remaining cleaner in the Aircomatic unit and rinse with water.
NOTE: In the unlikely event that the problem persists, the evaporator must be
cleaned with a spray lance and cleaner.
