Check Steering Column, Replace if Necessary

This Customer 1 Action has been initiated because the steering column may have increased axial
play which could lead to a clicking noise or play in the steering column. An authorized MercedesBenz dealer will check the steering column on the affected vehicles and replace it, if necessary.
THIS ACTION ONLY AFFECTS DEMO VEHICLES AT YOUR DEALERSHIP.

Prior to performing this Customer 1 Action:
Please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously
repaired.

Procedure
1.

Check steering column for axial play:
Note: The steering column should be fully extended to the outward limit.
Get a good grip with both hands on the 6 o’clock position of the steering wheel and check the
steering column for increased axial play in the up and down direction (arrows, Figure 1). Audible clicking
will be heard if axial play is present.
Note:



Axial play reaches up to 5 mm.
If no axial play with clicking noise is found (OK): Procedure is complete.



If axial play with clicking noise is found (NOT OK): Proceed to step 2.

2. Open a PTSS case in the event that the steering column requires replacement and wait until guidance is
provided by FTS.
Note:
If instructed to replace steering column by FTS, refer to WIS: AR46.10-P-0400LW.
