Complaint:

Wind noises (whistling) at windshield between approx. 55 and 75 mph

Cause:

Possible cause: Gap between bumper and chrome surround of radiator trim (Figure 1).
To find out whether the gap is actually the cause of the whistling noise, please tape over the transition between the
bumper and the chrome surround using a suitable adhesive tape and perform a test drive (Figure 2).
If the wind noise disappears, it was caused by the gap between the bumper and the chrome surround and can be eliminated by sticking foam elements into the chrome surround.
Note: The document does not cover any other reasons for wind noises.

Remedy:

Detach bumper and seal gap between bumper and chrome surround with foam:
1. Remove bumper
2. Undo 4 bolts (Torx 10) at top of chrome surround (Figure 3)
3. Carefully remove chrome surround using a wedge (Figure 4)
4. Prepare foam elements (Figure 5)
5. Stick foam elements between cavities (adhesive surface facing down) (Figures 6 and 7)
6. Assemble bumper and reattach to vehicle
7. Perform a test drive
If the wind noises are still present after installation of the foam elements, again tape over the transition and perform a
test drive to find out whether the wind noises are still being caused by the gap at the transition. If this is the case, proceed with the repair below
Remedy: Set the gap dimension and the transition from the bumper to the engine hood to the maximum permissible
values in order to reduce the stresses in the bumper. If it is not possible to eliminate the whistling noise with this adjustment, there is the option of fixing the catch hooks of the chrome frame in place with adhesive.
Procedure for fixing catch hooks in place:
1. Fix chrome frame in place with masking tape (Figure 8). The gap of the chrome frame must be checked using a
gauge. Specified dimension: < 0.5 mm
2. The upper catch hooks are glued in the marked areas with the 2-component adhesive* (Figure 9, item B). The bumper must remain in position until the adhesive has cured (observe the instructions for the adhesive).
