This bulletin provides the procedure to replace the fuel tank straps on certain 2005-2007MY
Sportage vehicles manufactured from May 27, 2004 through April 25, 2007. Although there
have been no customer complaints about the fuel tank straps on the affected vehicles, Kia has
decided to do a Product Improvement campaign to replace those straps. The improved straps
will increase the long term durability of these parts. Before conducting the procedure, verify the
vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
NOTICE
To assure complete customer satisfaction, always remember to refer to WebDCS
Warranty Coverage (validation) Inquiry Screen (Service → Warranty Coverage →
Warranty Coverage Inquiry) for a list of any additional campaigns that may need to be
performed on the vehicle before returning it to the customer.

FUEL TANK STRAP REPLACEMENT (PI1801)
Replacement Procedure:
1. Remove the eight (8) front fuel tank
cover mounting bolts (A).

Detach the center exhaust pipe support
from the rubber hanger (B).

Remove the fuel tank cover (C).

4.
Insert a supporting jack (D) under the left
(driver’s) side of the fuel tank assembly.

Loosen and remove the front right side
fuel tank strap retaining bolt (E).

Loosen and remove the rear, right side
fuel tank strap retaining bolt (F).

Remove the right side fuel tank strap (G).

Before installing the new strap, clean the
surface of the fuel tank strap area using
a wire brush, and then spray the fuel
tank surface where the strap will be
placed with anti-corrosion undercoating
spray. (Picture is for reference only,

replacement)

Install the new and improved fuel tank
strap (H) in the reverse order of removal.

Tightening torque, bolts (E) & (F):
36.2 – 47.0 lb.ft. (49.0 – 63.7 N.m,
5.0 – 6.5 kgf.m)

10. Repeat steps 6-10 to replace the left side fuel tank strap with the new improved part.
11. Reinstall the fuel tank cover and exhaust hanger support in the reverse order of removal.
