SQUEAK OR TICK NOISE FROM LEAF SPRINGS

IF YOU CONFIRM:
A squeak or tick noise coming from the rear suspension leaf springs when driving.

NOTE:


Noise is more pronounced when driving over rough roads below 30 mph.



Chassis ears may be helpful to isolate this noise.



If the source of the squeak or tick noise is NOT either the left or right side leaf
spring, this bulletin does not apply. Refer to ASIST for further diagnostic and repair
information.

ACTION:
Clean the rear leaf spring tip inserts.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Lift the vehicle to gain access to the leaf spring assemblies.


Refer to the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) section GI- General Information for
lifting point information.

2. Place tool J-52470 at the location
shown in Figure 1, about 2 inches from
tip insert at the rear of the leaf spring
assembly.

3. Squeeze tool to spread leaf spring and
allow access to leaf spring tip insert.

4. Using a clean and dry shop towel,
clean the leaf spring tip insert to
remove all debris.
WARNING: Do not allow any body
parts (such as fingers) between the
leaf springs.

5. Remove shop towel.

6. Remove tool J-52470.

7. Perform tip insert cleaning procedure on both the left and right side rear leaf springs.

8. To verify repair, test drive the vehicle under the same conditions it was originally
duplicated.
