SUBJECT VEHICLES: 13MY-18MY COE Trucks equipped
with a J05 engine

OVERVIEW:
The subject vehicle may experience water intrusion into the neutral
switch of the transmission. This concern may cause the following
symptoms:
The starter motor may fail to engage when activated.
MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) may illuminate with the
following DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) or DTC’s stored in the
transmission ECU (Electronic Control Unit).
o DTC P0705: Shift Position Switch System Failure
o DTC P0706: Abnormality In D Range Pressure
An enhanced neutral switch and transmission harness are available
to address these concerns.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
- Read and understand all instructions and procedures before you
begin the work.
- Read and follow all WARNINGS and NOTICES set forth in this
publication. These alerts help to avoid damage to components,
serious personal injury, or both.
- Park the vehicle on a flat, level and solid surface.
- Place the gear shift lever in "Neutral" or "Park".
- Apply the parking brake firmly and confirm parking brake activation.
- Turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition switch.
- Always wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes.
- Place wheel chocks in front of and behind all the wheels to prevent
the vehicle from moving.

VEHICLE PREPARATION:
1. Park the vehicle on a level and solid surface.

2. Confirm the engine is stopped, the ignition switch is in the off (LOCK)
position, and the key is removed.

3. Apply the parking brake.

4.

Chock all the wheels.

Repair Procedure:
1. From below the driver’s side of the vehicle, remove the 3 bolts
securing the shield to the transmission. Retain all parts for reinstallation.

2. The transmission harness has 8 electrical connections and 5 harness
clips that should be disconnected. After disconnection, remove and discard
the harness. If the locking lever breaks on the chassis harness, remove the
locking lever from a new connector shell (Part No. 8282477050) and
transfer it to the connector on the vehicle.

3. Remove the 2 bolts securing the neutral switch to the transmission and
discard the neutral switch. Retain the 2 bolts for reinstallation.

4. Place the transmission gear selector in the Neutral (N) position, and
install the new neutral switch. Tighten the lock nut to the specified torque.
Stake the nut stopper tabs against the lock nut. Refer to the Chassis
Workshop Manual for the neutral switch adjustment procedure which
can be found under the following headings:
- Transmission A465
- Transmission Mechanical
- Neutral Switch
Once the neutral switch has been adjusted, tighten the 2 bolts to the
specified torque.
Specified Torque (Lock Nut): 5 lb-ft (7 Nm)
Specified Torque (Neutral Switch): 9 lb-ft (12.5 Nm)

5. Install the new transmission harness. There are 8 electrical connections
and 5 harness clips to connect. Make certain that both locking levers above
the transmission are undamaged and fully engaged.

6. Install the 3 bolts securing the shield to the transmission. Tighten to the
specified torque.
Specified Torque: 9 lb-ft (12.5 Nm)

7. Clear any DTC’s present using the Hino Diagnostic Explorer 2 (Hino DX
II). Verify that the engine starts in the Park (P) and Neutral (N) positions.
Verify that the reverse alarm sounds in the Reverse (R) position. The
indicator in the meter display should also correspond to the selected gear
position. If it does not, adjust the neutral position as required. If the
indicator is displayed properly, proceed to the final inspection procedure,
below.

FINAL INSPECTION
1. To complete this TSB review and confirm the following:
•

All harness clips and wire connections are secure on the
transmission.

•

The neutral switch and shield bolts have been tightened to
their specified torque.

•

The engine starts in the Park and Neutral positions, and the
indicator on the meter display shows the proper gear in each
position.

•

No DTC’s are present in the transmission ECU.
