OIL PRESSURE SENSOR REPLACEMENT

Prevost vehicles
Rev B: Added “VBC campaign #”
DESCRIPTION
On the vehicles affected by this bulletin, the engine oil pressure sensors for the piston cooling jet (PCJ)
and the main oil gallery have to be replaced with an updated pressure sensor to avoid erroneous low oil
pressure diagnostic codes.
In addition, some Volvo engines may have experienced an oil pressure sensor failure leading to oil
contamination into the engine wire harness. If oil contamination is observed in the engine harness, install
a jumper harness to protect the new sensor. This jumper harness will stop oil from wicking back down and
possibly causing damage to the new sensor or cause later improper diagnostics.

PROCEDURE

DANGER
Park vehicle safely, apply parking brake, stop engine. In the battery box, set the battery cut-off switch
to the OFF position prior to working on the vehicle.
1)

Disconnect the PCJ oil pressure sensor connector rotating the knurled collar counterclockwise.
See the images below to locate the sensor.

2)

Unscrew the sensor from the oil filter housing.

3)

Inspect the engine harness for oil contamination. If a sensor is being replaced for electrical faults
and oil has NOT wicked into the harness, REPLACE THE SENSOR ONLY. (p/n 21634021)
a. Install the new pressure sensor (p/n 21634021). Torque: 18.5 ± 2 ft-lb.
b. Reinstall the connector and rotate clockwise to lock.

4)

If a sensor has failed AND is wicking oil into the engine harness, REPLACE THE SENSOR AND
INSTALL THE JUMPER HARNESS p/n 22205127.

a. Clip applicable cable ties and remove P-clamps securing the oil pressure sensor harness.
b. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor harness from the sensor.
c.

Install the new pressure sensor (p/n 21634021). Torque: 18.5 ± 2 ft-lb.

d. Reverse the back shells on the jumper harness connectors before installing the jumper
harness.
e. Clean out the electrical connector pins and sensor mounting surface with contact cleaner.
Connect the 90 degree end of the jumper harness to the oil pressure sensor and the
straight end to the harness. Install cable ties and P-clamps as necessary.
f.

If oil has wicked to the engine control module connectors, clean the connectors
thoroughly with electronic cleaner and dry with compressed air.

5)

On the other side of the engine (curb side), locate the Engine oil pressure sensor (Main gallery)

Disconnect the oil pressure sensor connector rotating the knurled collar counterclockwise. Refer to
images below to locate the sensor.

7)

Unscrew the sensor from the engine block.

8)

Inspect the engine harness for oil contamination. If a sensor is being replaced for electrical faults
and oil has NOT wicked into the harness, REPLACE THE SENSOR ONLY. (p/n 21634021)
a. Install the new pressure sensor (p/n 21634021). Torque: 18.5 ± 2 ft-lb.
b. Reinstall the connector and rotate clockwise to lock.

9)

If a sensor has failed AND is wicking oil into the engine harness, REPLACE THE SENSOR AND
INSTALL THE JUMPER HARNESS p/n 22205127.

b. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor harness from the sensor.
c.

Install the new pressure sensor (p/n 21634021). Torque: 18.5 ± 2 ft-lb.

d. Reverse the back shells on the jumper harness connectors before installing the jumper
harness.
e. Clean out the electrical connector pins and sensor mounting surface with contact cleaner.
Connect the 90 degree end of the jumper harness to the oil pressure sensor and the
straight end to the harness. Install cable ties and P-clamps as necessary.
f.

If oil has wicked to the engine control module connectors, clean the connectors
thoroughly with electronic cleaner and dry with compressed air.

10)

Run the engine and check for leaks.

11)

Use Tech tool to clear any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).

PARTS / WASTE DISPOSAL
Return replaced parts to Prevost with A.F.A. for full reimbursement.
