Field Action Transmission Identification:
Prior to the repair of a suspect transmission, verify that the Field Action repair has NOT already been performed
by looking for the identification mark shown in Figure 2. After you have confirmed an identifying mark is NOT
present, contact the Allison Transmission Technical Assistance Center (TAC). If you believe the vehicle qualifies
for this field action and is not contained in the affected list, contact TAC at 18002525283 or 3172420700 or
email: [email protected]
Proactive Repair:
Authorized Allison Service Outlet Field Action Responsibility.
1. Confirm vehicle is within the affected VINs contained in Table 1.
2. Before starting service:
a. Verify the transmission nameplate does not have an “X” Identification Mark indicating this Field Action
service work has already been performed. Refer to Figure 2
b. Verify the service parts shown in Table 2 are in inventory to support service work.

3. Remove transmission following Allison Tech Tip TT7829. Tech Tip TT7829 can be found on the Allison
Extranet.
4. Remove engine crankshaft bolts and discard.
5. Remove flexplate assembly P/N 29553895.
6. Install flexplate assembly P/N 29558081 by aligning small hole in flexplate center with small hole in flywheel
center. Ensure side marked “ENGINE SIDE” is facing the engine.
7. Install 10 NEW crankshaft bolts using Navistar
P/N 3005144C1.
8. Torque crankshaft bolts to the following Navistar requirements:

a. Torque crankshaft bolts per Figure 1 to 100 N∙m (74 lb/ft).
b. Angle tighten crankshaft bolts per Figure 1 90 degrees.
c. Angle tighten crankshaft bolts per Figure 1 an additional 90 degrees.
9. Remove flexplate adaptor P/N 29545926 from the transmission torque converter. Retain the 12 bolts
removed as they may be reused.
10. Install flexplate adaptor P/N 29558082 onto torque converter and install the 12 bolts that were removed.
Torque bolts to 36 N∙m (27 lb/ft).
11. Install transmission following Allison Tech Tip TT7829.
12. Recalibrate transmission TCM.
13. Stamp or etch an “X” into the transmission nameplate in the location shown in Figure 2.

3. Remove transmission following Allison Tech Tip TT7829. Tech Tip TT7829 can be found on the Allison

4. Remove engine crankshaft bolts and discard.
5. Remove flexplate assembly P/N 29553895.
6. If replacement required, remove engine flywheel.
7. If required, install new engine flywheel P/N 3003994C93.
8. Install flexplate assembly P/N 29558081 by aligning small hole in flexplate center with small hole in flywheel
center. Ensure side marked “ENGINE SIDE” is facing engine.
9. Install 10 NEW crankshaft bolts using Navistar P/N 3005144C1.
10. Torque crankshaft bolts to the following Navistar requirements:

11. Remove flexplate adaptor P/N 29545926 from the transmission torque converter. Retain the 12 bolts
removed as they may be reused.
12. Install transmission lifting bracket J51026 onto transmission main case mounting pads.
13. Install transmission on turnover stand J1750A, J29109 or equivalent.
14. Remove transmission
drain plug and drain fluid into a clean container for fluid reuse.
15. Position transmission with the torque converter facing up.
16. Remove torque converter plug.
17. Remove torque converter retaining bolt from turbine shaft and retain.
18. Attach a sling to the flexplate adaptor flange by positioning the adaptor flange connections an equal distance
from each other. Using a hoist, carefully lift the torque converter from the torque converter housing.
19. Inspect inside diameter of torque converter pump hub for damage. If the pump hub has contacted the
outside diameter of the ground sleeve causing damage similar to the example shown in Figure 4, the
complete transmission
must be replaced. Contact the Allison Technical Assistance Center to arrange
shipment of a replacement transmission. If damage is not present on the pump hub inside diameter,
continue with the replacement of the torque converter.
20. Remove sling and install in same manner on new torque converter. Using a hoist, carefully install torque
converter.
21. Measure torque converter axial location to verify proper installation. Axial location is 44.046.8 mm
(1.7321.842 inch) when properly installed. Refer to Figure 5.
22. Install torque converter retaining bolt removed in 17.
23. Remove reverse idler gear cover and gasket.

24. Install J51170 Reverse Idler Gear Holding Tool onto the reverse idler gear and insert pin through tool
and gear. Refer to Figure 6.
25. Torque bolt to 339406 N∙m (250300 lb/ft).
26. Install new torque converter pilot plug with Oring and torque to 5060 N m (3744 lb/ft).
27. Remove J51170 Reverse Idler Gear Holding Tool.
28. Install new reverse idler cover gasket and original reverse idler gear cover. Install bolts and torque to 2429
N∙m (1821 lb/ft).
29. Install flexplate adaptor P/N 29558082 onto torque converter. Install the 12 bolts that were removed and
torque to 36 N∙m (27 lb/ft).
30. Remove transmission from turnover stand.
31. Remove lifting bracket J51026.
32. Install transmission following Allison Tech Tip TT7829. Refill transmission
with fluid removed in 14.
33. Recalibrate transmission TCM.
34. Stamp or etch an “X” into the transmission nameplate in the location shown in Figure 2.

TranStar® vehicle(s) equipped with N13 engine and Allison TC10® Series Transmission.
Reason For This Field Action:
Allison Transmission and Navistar
have jointly identified a potential quality issue related to the adaptation hardware
between the Navistar N13 engine and the Allison TC10® transmission. Damage to the adaptation hardware can
progress and lead to failure of the flexplate. This Field Action is being initiated to replace the flexplate assembly
with an updated part.
This Field Action pertains only to International
® ProStar® and TranStar® trucks equipped with Navistar
N13 engines
and TC10® transmissions
.
How Long Will The Repair Take:
Installation of updated hardware typically can be completed in one day. Additional time may be required to schedule
and process your vehicle. Making an appointment is highly recommended to ensure a faster repair. Please ask an
Authorized Allison Distributor or Dealer how much time will be needed to schedule, process and repair your vehicle.
