SYMPTOM
Under a very specific hot restart, the customer may complain the vehicle makes a grinding or pump noise for about 2
seconds. Some may also describe it as a starter noise.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
A pressure control valve is vibrating in the CVT lower valve body on a hot restart.
NOTE: This noise does not impact function or reliability. Honda has an updated lower valve body to eliminate the noise.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Do the Verification Sequence to try and create the noise. If the noise can be duplicated, install the updated lower valve
body.

DIAGNOSIS
You may or may not be able to duplicate the customer’s complaint due to it taking a very specific hot soak to get the
noise to occur. Use the Verification Sequence to duplicate the noise, and compare it to the audio clip included in this
bulletin.
Verification Sequence
1. Connect the i-HDS and go to the A/T Data List.
2. Do the stall test for 5 seconds.
3. Idle the engine for 10 seconds.
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the CVT fluid reaches 176°F (80°C).
5. Shut off the vehicle for 45 minutes. (After 45 minutes the CVT fluid temperature should be 140-149°F [60-65°C]).
6. Restart the vehicle and check for the noise.
•

If the noise is the same as the one in the audio clip, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

•

If the noise cannot be duplicated or is not the same as the audio clip, continue with normal troubleshooting.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Replace the lower valve body. Refer to the service information.
2. Fill the transmission with 6.1 US qts (5.8 L) of HCF-2 CVT.
NOTE: Always use Honda Genuine HCF-2 CVT fluid. Using the wrong type of fluid may damage the transmission.
3. Recheck the fluid level. Refer to the transmission fluid (HCF-2) level check procedure in the service information.
NOTE: Make sure the CVT is filled to the proper level. If it is not, the transmission may experience poor
performance and belt damage.
4. Reset the Maintenance Minder.
•

If the Maintenance Minder required a CVT fluid replacement, reset the Maintenance Minder using the gauge.

•

If the Maintenance Minder did not require a CVT fluid replacement, reset the Maintenance Minder using the
i-HDS.

Resetting Individual Maintenance Items with the i-HDS
1. Turn the ignition to ON.
2. Make sure the i-HDS communicates with the vehicle and the PCM. If it does not communicate, troubleshoot the
DLC circuit.
3. Select BODY ELECTRIC.
4. Select GAUGES.
5. Select ADJUSTMENT.
6. Select MAINTENANCE INFORMATION.
7. Select MAINTENANCE MINDER.
8. Select the individual maintenance item you wish to reset.
