Complaint:

Due to faulty bonding, the chafe protective film on the seat belt extender toothed rack can detach.

Cause:

The crumpled chafe protective film can cause noises. The belt outlet trim ring on the 8-pillar may also be damaged.

Remedy:

Replacement of toothed rack assembly (seat belt extender toothed rack)

Remove seat belt extender toothed rack

1. Completely open side window.

(Figure 1)

2. Detach anchor fitting cap and unscrew seat belt anchor fitting bolt.

(Figure 2)

3. Electrically extend seat belt extender toothed rack or pull it out carefully by hand.

4. Grip seat belt extender toothed rack and pull out.

(Figure 3)

Important: When pulling out, the seat belt extender may only be gripped in the specified area.

- The seat belt extender toothed rack on the passenger side must be removed within 5 s (seat mat not occupied) before the retraction cycle commences. Risk of trapping!!

- The retraction cycle can be extended to 1 min by weighing down the seat mat (sitting on the seat mat) on the passenger side. Risk of trapping!!

5. Unthread seat belt tab and anchor fitting from toothed rack end piece.

6. Push in seat belt extender toothed rack carefully and without sudden movements until the first teeth mesh. The seat

belt extender toothed rack can then be retracted automatically or manually. (Figure 5)

Remark:

Pushing in seat belt extender toothed rack manually: Carefully push the toothed rack to the end position with no sudden movements.

Retracting the seat belt extender toothed rack automatically: Fold back driver/front passenger backrest, ignition ON,

close driver/ front passenger door, if necessary repeat ignition OFF and ON again.

Remark: To prevent confusion of the left/right seat belt extender toothed racks, they are identifiable by laser-etched

(Figure 6)

"L" I "R" and by the chamfer of the toothed rack.

7. Thread seat belt anchor fitting through toothed rack end piece.

(Figure 7)

Remark: When threading in, avoid damaging/scratching the toothed rack end piece.

8. Thread in seat belts.

8.1 Twist belt strap through 180° (Figure 8)

8.2 Pass through cap, open side first (Figure 9)

8.3 Twist cap and belt strap back through 180° (Figure 10)

8.4 Thread through belt tab (Figure 11)

9. Only retract the belt extender with the electrically actuated motor. (Figure 12)

Remark: Move seat to driver position, ignition ON, close doors.
