INTRODUCTION
Nissan is conducting a voluntary service campaign on certain Model Year 2011 Versa sedan
vehicles to replace the curtain air bag ramp brackets. This service will be performed at no
charge for parts or labor.

IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
Nissan has assigned identification number P1283 to this campaign. This number must appear
on all communications and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign.

DEALER RESPONSIBILITY
Dealers are to correct each vehicle falling within the range of this campaign that enters the
service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by
transient (tourist) owners and vehicles in a dealer’s inventory.

Nissan Bulletins are intended for use by qualified technicians, not 'do-it-yourselfers'. Qualified technicians are
properly trained individuals who have the equipment, tools, safety instruction, and know-how to do a job properly
and safely. NOTE: If you believe that a described condition may apply to a particular vehicle, DO NOT assume
that it does. See your Nissan dealer to determine if this applies to your vehicle.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Record the radio station presets:

2. Turn the ignition OFF.

3. Disconnect both battery cables, negative cable first.

IMPORTANT: Follow all cautions, warnings, and notes in the Electronic Service Manual
(ESM) when working on or near a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), such as an airbag.

4. Remove the 3 headlining clips shown in
Figure 1.

Clips are located at the rear of the
headlining.

•

Use a plastic trim tool to pop out the
clips.

5. Partially remove the door seal from
the rear door:

Remove seal from top, front, and
rear of door opening, down to the
kick plate.

6. Remove the rear assist grip.

Open the covers and remove the 2
bolts.

7. Snap loose and remove the rear pillar
finisher.

Finisher is held on with 5 clips.

shown in Figure 4.

8. Remove the 3 air bag inflator mounting
bolts shown in Figure 6.

9. Remove the 2 air bag bracket bolts
shown in Figure 7.

Curtain air bag
10. Maneuver the curtain air bag from
behind the headlining as shown.

NOTE: With the air bag in this position,
perform steps 11 through 16.

Red stripe tape from kit
11. Apply tape around the end of the
curtain roll as shown in Figure 9.
•

Use 1 strip of red striped tape
supplied with the bracket kit.

•

This tape will keep the curtain from
unrolling while performing the next
steps.

12. Remove tape from the rear curtain
ramp bracket.

13. Remove the old rear curtain ramp
bracket from the curtain roll eyelet.

bracket into the curtain roll eyelet as
shown.

15. Tape the new rear curtain ramp bracket
in place as shown.

Use 2 strips of blue striped tape
supplied with the bracket kit.

16. Remove the red striped tape from the
end of the curtain roll.

NOTE: This is the tape you applied
back in step 11.

17. Attach the new rear curtain ramp bracket:
•

Make sure the anti-rotation tab (hook) is placed in the correct body hole.

•

Use one new bolt supplied with the kit; torque to 10.8 N•m (1.8 kg-m, 8 ft-lb).

NOTE: The old bracket had 2 bolts; the new bracket has only one bolt.

18. Reinstall the curtain air bag, rear pillar finisher, and rear door seal in reverse order.
•

Use new air bag inflator mounting bolts supplied with the kit:
Torque specification is 10.8 N•m (1.8 kg-m, 8 ft-lb).

19. Install the new rear curtain ramp bracket on the other side. (Make sure to install a new
ramp bracket on both sides).
•

Refer to steps 5 through 18.

20. Reinstall the clips at the rear of the headlining.

21. Reconnect the battery cables, positive cable first.

22. Reset the clock and the radio station presets.

23. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON. Make sure the air bag warning lamp (on the instrument
panel) turns ON and then goes OFF after about 7 seconds.

24. If equipped, perform power window initialization for auto power windows as follows:
a. Turn ignition switch ON.
b. Open the window to its full down position by operating the power window switch.
c. Move the power window switch in the up direction (auto close position) and hold. Keep
holding the switch even when the window is completely closed and then release after 4
seconds.

Nissan is committed to providing the highest levels of product quality and customer satisfaction.
With that in mind, we want to bring to your attention important information regarding your 2011
Nissan Versa sedan vehicle.
REASON FOR CAMPAIGN
On certain specific 2011 Versa sedan vehicles, the rear portion of the roof mounted side curtain
air bag may not deploy optimally in types of crashes where side curtain airbag deployment is
expected. While the side curtain air bag still meets all applicable safety standards and provides
appropriate coverage, Nissan will replace the curtain airbag brackets in your vehicle with new
ones to help ensure optimal deployment.
WHAT NISSAN WILL DO
To assure your continued satisfaction and confidence in your Nissan Versa sedan your Nissan
dealer will replace both rear side curtain air bag brackets free of charge for parts and labor.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Contact your Nissan dealer at your earliest convenience in order to arrange an appointment.
This service, free for parts and labor, should take an hour and a half to complete, but your
Nissan dealer may require your vehicle for a longer period of time based upon the workshop
schedule. To ensure the least inconvenience for you, it is important that you have an
appointment before bringing your vehicle to the Nissan dealer for service. Please bring
this notice with you when you keep your service appointment. Instructions have been sent to
your Nissan dealer.
