The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation after receiving Nissan early warning reports (EWR) concerning supplemental restraint system (SRS) light illumination on model year (MY) 2012 Nissan Versa vehicles.Information in the reports suggested that the SRS spiral cable harness from the spiral cassette to the driver?s air bag module became pinched within the steering wheel assembly during installation.The pinching condition was apparently causing a short to ground condition. As reported by Nissan, the shorts were the result of isolated operator errors, specifically errors in the way the harness was routed in the steering wheel area.Nissan advised that a production countermeasure was implemented on December 10, 2011 in order to reduce misrouting the spiral cable harness.If an electrical short does occur, the red air bag warning light is designed to continuously flash to alert the driver.However, a shorted harness may prevent the air bag from deploying in a frontal collision.The opening resume originally identified the subject vehicle population as all 2012 Nissan Versa vehicles. It was noted by Nissan that the MY 2012 Versa Sedan and MY 2012 Versa Hatchback vehicles were built on different platforms and varied significantly in design, specifically in that they are equipped with different steering column and air bag module components.Accordingly, the subject vehicle population for analysis was limited to 2012 Nissan Versa Sedan models.Through analysis of the data Nissan provided, ODI determined that 13 manufacturer reports and 39 warranty claims submitted were potentially a result of pinched and/or shorted spiral cable assemblies. These reports occurred prior to the assembly process change on December 10, 2011.ODI notes that an additional six warranty claims occurred after the process change, but this population had a significantly lower rate of failure than those occurring beforehand.Therefore the subject vehicle population shown above covers sedan vehicles built from the start of production through December 9, 2011.ODI?s analysis indicated that this condition typically occurred early in the life of the vehicle with 40% occurring prior to vehicle sale or delivery, and 69% with less than 2 months in service.When compared to ODI investigations involving similar air bag concerns, this investigation has a low rate of failure.ODI has not yet received any related consumer complaints and no injuries or crashes have been reported that relate to the alleged problem. Therefore, a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist.The agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

On July 9, 2012, Deere & Company notified the NHTSA that it had decided certain John Deere 8.1 liter compressed natural gas engines, manufactured from June 2002 through January 2008, contain a safety related defect.Failures can occur within the engine turbocharger.The turbine or compressor wheel may fail, resulting in subsequent damage to the engine and/or an oil leak.Failure of the turbine or compressor wheel may result in smoke, fire and stalling.This issue was assigned recall number 12E-026.At the opening of this EQ, Deere & Company had not yet supplied several pertinent pieces of information as to its 12E-026 safety recall.On August 15, 2012, the Recall Management Division (RMD) mailed an information request (IR) letter to Deere & Company requesting: The number of engines containing this defect; its recall remedy plan; its recall reimbursement plan; the estimated date on which owner notification letters would be mailed; and a list of customers that purchased the affected engines.On August 24, 2012, Deere & Company submitted its written response where it detailed that 600 engines were affected by the recall.Deere & Company also noted that its remedy plan and reimbursement plan would be forthcoming, but were not yet available.Deere and Company mailed interim owner notification letters to its affected customers on September 5, 2012, but as of the closing of this EQ, no final remedy plan has been submitted.Per a telephone conversation with Deere & Company's counsel on November 20, 2012, it is now estimated that the remedy should be available the first week of March 2013.RMD will continue to monitor this recall's remedy and notification schedule.A purchaser list was also submitted by Deere & Company with their August 24, 2012 letter.The majority of defective engines were sold to Daimler Bus North America, New Flyer, and Thor Industries.Vehicles affected by these engines were recalled under 12V-447 (Daimler Bus), 12V-466 (New Flyer), and 12V-469 (Thor) shortly after receiving notification from Deere & Company.An additional one hundred and thirty-eight (138) engines were sold to two distributors, Bell Power Systems and Western Power Products.In order to learn if any other vehicle manufacturers received defective engines, on October 3, 2012, RMD mailed IR letters to both companies requesting a list of purchasers.After receiving no response from either company, a second IR letter was mailed to each company on November 15, 2012.Both Bell Power Systems and Western Power Products responded promptly with their respective purchaser lists.Their engines were not sold to any other vehicle manufacturers for use as original motor vehicle equipment.As all defective engines installed as original equipment will be recalled, this Equipment Query is closed.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed complaint data provided by Nissan as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 2 unique reports alleging inappropriate autonomous brake activation while driving.During PE12-022, Nissan identified a condition in model year (MY) 2013 Infiniti JX 35 that may result in inappropriate autonomous activation of emergency breaking by the Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA). According to Nissan, unique road environment anomalies can affect proper IBA operation and may cause IBA activation where it is not needed.ODI investigators were able to replicate the anomaly and found IBA interventions are extremely brief and may interrupt travelling speeds but do not stop the vehicle. Nissan developed a software countermeasure to address the condition and has initiated a customer satisfaction campaign to reprogram the Radar and Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) control units on all affected vehicles. The bulletin was sent to dealers on August 10, 2012 and the owner letter mailing began on September 4, 2012. See the investigative file for copies of Nissan's bulletin and owner letter. The condition represents a low risk to motor vehicle safety and is adequately addressed by Nissan's service campaign.
