I WAS DRIVING IN THE CITY WITH MY BABY IN THE BACK SEAT WHEN I STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT, WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN I PRESSED THE GAS TO HEAR A LOUD KNOCKING UNDER THE HOOD OF MY CAR AND MY ENGINE STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY LOCAL GARAGE WHO SAID THE ENGINE THREW A ROD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, I THEN TOWED IT TO THE KIA DEALERSHIP AND DISCUSSED WITH CONSUMER AFFAIRS THE ISSUE. THEY AGREED TO REPLACE MY ENGINE 'IN GOOD FAITH' STATING THAT THIS ISSUE IS BEING RECALLED IN OVER 1 MILLION VEHICLES OF THE SAME MAKE BUT MY 2013 KIA SPORTAGE DOES NOT FALL UNDER THE RECALL SOLELY DUE TO THE FUEL INJECTOR THAT IS USED ON MY ENGINE(I HAVE AN MFI INSTEAD OF A GDI) AND NOTED THAT IT HAS HAPPENED IN THE SAME EXACT ENGINE IN MANY OF THE VEHICLES. AFTER PICKING UP MY CAR AND PAYING OUT OF POCKET FOR THE TOWS AND ADDITIONAL REPAIRS RELATING TO REPLACING MY ENGINE KIA HAS REFUSED TO PROVIDE REIMBURSEMENT AND ALSO REFUSED TO PROVIDE MY ENGINE WITH THE LIFETIME WARRANTY AND KNOCK DETECTION SENSOR THAT THE GDI MODELS ARE RECEIVING AND REPLACED MY SHORT BLOCK WITH THE SAME ENGINE. THIS HAS NOW BECAME A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AND KIA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS HAPPENING IN THE THETA 2 MFI MOTORS AS WELL.

I THEN PUT IT IN DRIVE AND THE SAME THING. THE ONLY WAY I GOT THE CAR TO GO WAS TO PUT IT IN PARK, TURN THE CAR OFF & THEN TURN IT BACK ON. THE 2ND TIME, I WAS SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT AT A VERY BUSY INTERSECTION WAITING TO TURN RIGHT ON RED. THE CAR WAS IN DRIVE AND I STARTED TO MAKE MY TURN BUT AGAIN, THE CAR WOULD NOT GO - IT WAS LIKE IT WAS IN NEUTRAL. WE CHECKED FOR ANY ERROR LIGHTS/MESSAGES (THERE WERE NONE) AND WE LOOKED TO MAKE SURE IT WAS IN GEAR AND THE D WAS 100% ON THE DASH AND THE GEAR SHIFT WAS IN DRIVE. AGAIN, THE ONLY WAY TO GET GOING WAS TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK, TURN IT OFF AND THEN START THE CAR AGAIN. THIS 2ND TIME, I WAS ALMOST REAR-ENDED AND IF THE LIGHT HAD NOT TURNED RED FOR THE CROSS TRAFFIC, I WOULD HAVE MOST LIKELY BEEN HIT. THE DEALER TOOK THE CAR BOTH TIMES, RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND EVEN DOWNLOADED THE BLACK BOX DATA; HOWEVER, BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE ISSUE, THEY COULD NOT FIX IT. THEY ALSO CONTACTED LEXUS "EXPERTS" AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO ISSUE. THERE IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CAR AND I AM NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. ATTACHED IS MORE DETAIL I GAVE TO THE DEALER WHEN THEY ASKED ME TO JOT DOWN EVERYTHING I COULD REMEMBER.

HAD A SIMILAR SCENARIO MANY YEARS AGO WHEN FIRST PURCHASING THE CAR, WHEN ACCELERATING IN THE HIGHWAY ND DRIVING STRAIGHT THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND THE CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING BECAUSE THE GAS PEDAL LOCKED, COULDNT TURN TGE STEERIBG WHEEL AT ALL. FELT AS IF THE CAR TURNED ITSELF OF EVEN THOUGH CAR ELECTRONICS WERE ON SUCH AS THE RADIO. SECONDS LATER THE LIGHTS ILUMINATED IN THE DASH AND WAS ABLE TO TURN ON THE CAR AND STEERIBG WHEEL UNLOCKED. IN 2014, I BOUGHT A NEW FORD ESCAPE FROM RHINEBECK FORD IN RHINEBECK NY. IT REMAINED IN PRISTINE CONDITION UNTIL ITS UNTIMELY 'DEATH' ON AUGUST 10, 2020. PRIOR TO AUGUST 10, IT WAS BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP APPROXIMATELY 15 TIMES TO ADDRESS SAFETY RECALLS. ON AUGUST 10 MY WIFE, SON AND NIECE BROKE DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO RHINEBECK FORD. AFTER EXAMINING THE CAR, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE ENGINE AND CYLINDERS HAVE COOLANT IN THEM, AND THE TRANSMISSION IS FULL OF METAL FILINGS. BOTH OF THESE ISSUES COMBINED MEAN THAT THE CAR IS DISEASED; HOWEVER RHINEBECK FORD IS STILL IN THE PROCESS OF CREATING A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF THE CAUSE OF DEATH. FORTUNATELY THESE DANGEROUS DEFECTS DID NOT RESULT IN INJURY TO MY FAMILY BUT THEY CERTAINLY DO REPRESENT A SERIOUS SAFETY RISK. ON AUGUST 10, THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 108,000 MILES ON IT. I WAS SOLD A DEFECTIVE AND UNSAFE VEHICLE AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY IS NOT WILLING TO MAKE THIS RIGHT. I MADE NUMEROUS PHONE CALLS TO FORD CORPORATE OFFICES AND WAS TOLD THAT SINCE THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED AND THERE ARE NO ACTIVE RECALLS PERTAINING TO DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSIONS OR ENGINES THAT THEY WOULD NOT STAND BY THEIR PRODUCT.
