8. Test-drive the vehicle by driving in reverse to confirm the condition is no longer present.
Repair Procedure 2 – 2WD 4Runner
1. Confirm the condition exists.
Is the vehicle a 2WD 4Runner exhibiting a condition where the front brakes produce a squealing
noise when driving forward or in reverse?
•
YES — Continue to step 2.
•
NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable
Repair Manual.
NOTE
If the 2WD 4Runner is already equipped with the countermeasure pad, shim kit, and f itting kit,
replace the disc rotor ONLY. Ref er to Repair Procedure 3. Replacement of the pad, shim kit, and
f itting kit is not necessary.
2. Remove the tire and wheel, disc, pad, shim kit, and anti-rattle spring.
A. Remove the tire and wheel.

B. Remove the front disc brake pad.

3. Confirm that the rotor is NEW and then install
the NEW rotor.
Does the rotor have a green dot on the hat?
•
NO — Do NOT proceed with repair until a
correctly marked rotor is obtained.
•
YES — Install the NEW rotor.

6. Install the front disc brake pad kit.
Using the disc brake piston spreader wide type, push back the front disc brake pistons, and
install the brake pad with the wear indicator and shims inside the caliper, as shown in
Figure 11. Ensure the brake pads orientation match using the stamped identifications on the
pad backing plate in Figure 12 and 13.
NOTE
The brake pad with the wear indicator is the inner pad and the brake pad without the wear indicator is
the outer pad.

7. Install the anti-rattle kit.
A. Install the front disc brake anti-rattle pin with the hole (upper side).
B. Install the NEW brake anti-rattle spring, then install the front disc brake anti-rattle pin with
the hole (lower side) as shown in Figure 14.
C. Install the pin hold clip to the front disc brake anti-rattle pin with the hole and engage the
hook to the disc brake cylinder assembly as shown in Figure 15.
D. Discard the OLD brake anti-rattle spring.

condition is no longer present.
Repair Procedure 3 – 2WD 4Runner (Disc Only)
1. Confirm the condition exists.
Is the vehicle a 2WD 4Runner already equipped with countermeasure brake pads, shim kit and
fitting kit, and exhibit a condition where the front brakes produce a squealing noise when
driving forward or in reverse?
•
YES — Continue to step 2.
•
NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable
Repair Manual.
NOTE
If the 2WD 4Runner is already equipped with the countermeasure pad, shim kit, and f itting kit,
replace the disc rotor ONLY. Replacement of the pad, shim kit, and f itting kit is not necessary.
