SITUATION

Customer may feel something transmitted via the steering column while turning the steering wheel.
There may also be coolant lost accompanied by a check control message: ‘Top up coolant’

CAUSE

CONFIDENTIAL

The coolant hose was not properly aligned
when installed.
The white marking on the hose should align
with the small black plastic mark on the heater
core connection shown by the yellow arrow.

Due to the hose being installed incorrectly, it
can now contact the steering shaft. Over time
this may cause a hole to be worn through the
coolant hose.

CORRECTION
When the customer states “it feels like something is being transmitted through the steering column
while turning the steering wheel”:
1) Check whether the identified coolant hose was installed in such a way that the two alignment
markings (white line on the coolant feed hose and mark on the heating and air conditioning unit
connection) are not lined up.
2) Ensure the coolant feed hose is located in front of the coolant return hose. The DMC label must
be visible!
3) Correct the position installation as needed.
If the steering column contact has damaged the coolant hose, this may include causing a coolant leak
at that point, and there is an accompanying check control message: ‘Top up coolant’
4) The coolant hose must be replaced IF it has been damaged by contact with the steering
column.

PROCEDURE

Proceed as follows.
1) Check whether the component has been
installed in such a way that the two markings
(white line on the coolant feed hose and
marking on the heating and air conditioning
unit connection (yellow arrow)) line up.
This photo shows a difference of alignment per
the red arrow.
Caution: Coolant hoses may be very hot if the
engine was recently run. Use gloves.

2) Check whether the routing of the coolant feed
hose is OK. The coolant feed hose must be
located in front of the coolant return hose. The
DMC label must be visible!

Here the routing is incorrect and the label cannot
be read, being blocked by the coolant return
hose (indicated in blue).

3) If the hose was incorrectly installed, reposition
it to the correct orientation.
NOTE 1: The Repair Instruction for the ‘coolant
feed hose connection to the heating and air
conditioning unit’ is not currently available. This
REP is scheduled to be added into AIR/ISTA
with the June 24, 2026 release.
Loosen the hose clamp and rotate the hose so
that the alignment marks point towards one
another.
NOTE 2: If the steering column contact has
damaged the coolant hose and may have
caused a coolant leak, then the hose must be
replaced.
4) The hose must be positioned a sufficient
distance from the steering shaft; at least 15 mm.
5) Refill and bleed cooling system if the system
has been opened.

handling.
BMW Antifreeze/Coolant: Claim the corresponding sublet dollar amount for the quantity needed to
replace what was drained. The one-gallon concentrate’s part number quantity needed to obtain a
50/50 coolant/water solution.
Enter this material cost in sublet and itemize the amount on the repair order and in claim comment
section.
