SITUATION
The decorative trims on the head restraints of
the driver’s seat and front passenger seat
cause groaning noises on any route, at any
temperature, even in a slightly reclined
position.
See attached video BV52 01 25 M5 Head
Restraint Groaning noise to hear the noise.

CAUSE
The edge of the aperture trim rubs against the seat leather upholstery at the point of contact.

CORRECTION
Replace the aperture trim on both seats in case of a noise concern with revised part number
52 10 7885235.

If the decorative trim causes groaning noises,
replace the decorative seat aperture trim (1)
with an improved part.

To remove the front decorative seat aperture trim,
you must first remove the trim (2) from the rear of
the seat. There are 6 retainer clips (1).
Follow Repair Instruction REP-TAT-P-5217-01

Disconnect the electrical connector for the trim M
light (1).

The revised front aperture trim can be identified
by a green dot sticker.

The improved part with the green dot sticker has
strips of felt attached.
Do not install the part if the felt is missing.

BMW Group’s AIR Application Resource for Flat Rate Labor Operation Codes
To obtain the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance information from the BMW Group AIR application
resource, start by entering the Chassis Number (last seven (7) characters of the VIN), and click on the
“Search” icon. If the “Vehicle Selection” window displays two or more model possible vehicle choices, select
the applicable Model, or enter the full VIN (17 characters) instead to proceed. Click on the “Flat Rate Units”
button and enter a flat rate labor operation code number “without spaces” in the field to the right, click on the
“Search” icon to display the corresponding listing of “Flat rate unit group details” that are available and their
corresponding FRU allowances.
