IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Bendix safety technologies complement safe driving practices. No
commercial vehicle safety technology replaces a skilled, alert driver
exercising safe driving techniques and proactive, comprehensive
driver training. Responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle
remains with the driver at all times.
The Bendix
® Intellipark® Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) system
is a driver assistance, not driver replacement, technology. Safe
driving practices, habits, and driver training are critical for safety
on the road.
The driver should always manually set the vehicle parking brakes
and should not rely on the Intellipark EPB system to do so. Data
captured through the Intellipark EPB system may show misuse of
the system.
Bendix ® -brand Electronic Control Units (ECUs), including the
Intellipark EPB ECU, are not designed to store data for purposes of
accident reconstruction, and Bendix® ACom® Diagnostic Software is
not intended to retrieve data for purposes of accident reconstruction.
Bendix makes no representations as to the accuracy of data or
video retrieved and interpreted from ECUs for purposes of accident
reconstruction. Bendix does not offer accident reconstruction
services or interpretation of stored data. Bendix
ECUs are not
protected from fire, loss of power, impact damage, or other conditions
that may be sustained in a crash situation and may cause data to be
unavailable or irretrievable.
This vehicle is equipped with a Bendix Intellipark EPB system. Vehicle
operators and maintenance personnel must observe the LEDs
present on the red and yellow switches to determine the status of the
Intellipark EPB system. Consult the Intellipark Operator’s Manual if all
LEDs do not illuminate immediately after the system powers on, or if
any of the LEDs are blinking. For complete maintenance information,
refer to SD-03-1189, Bendix® Intellipark® Electronic Park Brake (EPB)
System, on B2Bendix.com.
In certain situations – particularly in cold weather or when the
vehicle has low system pressure – a long switch push or pull may
be required for the vehicle to unpark or park. This is similar to the
current pneumatic valve functionality. In these circumstances, hold
the switch in the pushed or pulled position until the LEDs indicate the
requested state (parked: illuminated LEDs; unparked: non-illuminated
LEDs). If the issue persists with a long switch push or pull, service
the vehicle. Refer to SD-03-1189, Bendix

Introduction
This Operator’s Manual provides an overview of the Bendix® Intellipark®
Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) system Dash Electronic Control Unit (DECU)
for towing and non-towing vehicles. This manual explains the safe practices,
functions, features, and alerts of the system. Vehicles equipped with the
Intellipark EPB system include electronic DECU switches instead of pneumatic
push/pull parking brake knobs.
Read this manual thoroughly before operating the system. Be familiar with the
controls, system alerts, and what to expect when the system is in operation.
Keep this manual in the vehicle as a reference for the system, its operation,
and its performance characteristics.

Setting and Releasing the Brakes
PULL the DECU switches to set

During vehicle startup, all four (4) LEDs
located on the DECU will illuminate for
approximately three (3) seconds, turn
off for approximately two (2) seconds,
then indicate the parking brake status.

Driver Assistance Features
Smart Unpark™
To release the tractor Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), all of the following
conditions must be met:
•
The ignition power is on.
•
•
The service brake pedal is
depressed.
The driver and passenger doors
are closed.
Once all of the above conditions are met, the red and yellow parking brake
switches may be pressed to release the trailer and tractor parking brakes. Refer
to the Premium Gauge Cluster documentation for information on messages or
alerts associated with this feature.
NOTE: If the driver receives a low air pressure warning, the vehicle will not
be able to be unparked.
Releasing the Trailer Brakes While the Tractor is Parked
(Trailer Charge)
If the tractor and trailer are parked and it is desired to deliver charge air to
operate trailer functions while leaving the tractor parked, the driver can unpark
the trailer by pressing the red switch on the Dash Electronic Control Unit (DECU)
even if the doors are open.
Rollaway Mitigation
The Rollaway Mitigation feature is intended to potentially help mitigate vehicle
rollaways by automatically setting the parking brakes if the driver forgets and
the Bendix
® Intellipark® EPB system detects the driver does not have control
over the vehicle and it is not parked.
There are three (3) conditions in which Intellipark will determine that the driver
forgot to park the vehicle:
1. When either door (driver or passenger) is open AND the vehicle speed
is low or zero, the accelerator pedal is not pressed, and the foot brake
is not being applied.
2. When the key is turned to the off position and the vehicle speed is low
or zero.
3. When the vehicle speed is low or zero, the accelerator pedal is not
pressed, the foot brake is not being applied, and the transmission is in
neutral for approximately three (3) seconds.
As soon as any of these three (3) conditions are met, the Rollaway Mitigation
feature can engage and automatically park both the tractor and trailer. Refer
to the Premium Gauge Cluster documentation for information on messages or
alerts associated with this feature

Auto Trailer Brake Release
NOTE: This feature may not be available on some early vehicle builds.
The Auto Trailer Brake Release feature is intended to detect when the driver
unknowingly attempts to drive a combination vehicle while the trailer brakes
are set. This may cause damage to the trailer or its contents since dragging
trailer brakes may lead to an unwanted thermal event.
The Bendix ® Intellipark ® Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) system may
automatically release the trailer parking brakes when the driver forgets to
do so, a trailer is detected, and the vehicle starts to accelerate. Refer to the
Premium Gauge Cluster documentation for information on messages or alerts
associated with this feature.

ARNING: Not all trailers are detectable. The Intellipark EPB system
is a driver assistance, not driver replacement, technology. Safe
driving practices, habits, and driver training are critical for safety
on the road. The driver should not rely on the Intellipark EPB system
to set the parking brakes.
Exhaust-at-Speed
In an emergency situation, the Intellipark EPB system may help the driver slow
the vehicle when the service brakes are not available. Pull the yellow or red
Dash Electronic Control Unit (DECU) switch until the parking brakes are applied.
Pulling the yellow DECU switch will apply both the tractor and trailer brakes,
while pulling the red DECU switch will apply the trailer brakes only.
Once an Exhaust-at-Speed event has been initiated, if the driver releases the
switch while the vehicle is in motion, the parking brakes may release if there
are no brake system malfunctions that would prevent them from releasing. If the
driver releases the switch when the vehicle is at low or zero speed, the parking
brakes will remain applied unless the driver pushes the switch(es).brakes will
release automatically.
Vehicle stability will be affected when the Exhaust-at-Speed feature is
active.

System Faults

ARNING: Blinking LEDs may indicate there is a problem or
fault with the system. Refer to the integrated display for further
instructions on how to proceed. In some instances, parking brakes
may be unavailable and the vehicle should NOT be driven. Refer
to the Premium Gauge Cluster documentation for information on
messages or alerts associated with Bendix
® Intellipark® Electronic
Parking Brake (EPB) system faults.

Setting the Parking Brakes While the Bendix® Intellipark®
Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) System is Faulted
Stop on a level surface and in a safe place. Shut off the engine (the key should
be in the off position) and open the driver-side window so the exhaust of air
can be heard, which would indicate the parking brakes being applied. Perform
the following steps:
1. Attempt to park the trailer by pulling the trailer parking switch (red). Listen
for the exhaust of air.
2. Attempt to park the tractor by pulling the tractor parking switch (yellow).

3. If the tractor or the trailer brakes did not apply, key off the vehicle and “fan
down” the reservoirs by repeatedly depressing the service brake pedal to
apply the spring brakes.
4. Chock the wheels.
5. Service the vehicle.
Starting the Vehicle After a Faulted Intellipark
EPB System has been Remedied
1. Ensure the wheels are chocked.
2. Start the engine and stay in the driver’s seat as the air brake system builds
air, filling the reservoirs.
3. Keep the brake pedal depressed to hold the vehicle stationary in case the
spring brakes are released.
4. Verify that as the air pressure builds, the parking brake status does not
change and all LEDs remain on.
5. Once the system air is at a normal operating range, the vehicle can be
unparked and driven. Push the yellow and red switches to unpark the
vehicle.
6. Pull the yellow and red switches to park the vehicle.
7. If the vehicle functions as expected, the wheel chocks may be removed.

Bobtail Mode
When driving “bobtail” – or driving
without a trailer attached to the tractor
– the trailer switch LEDs should be
illuminated unless bobtail mode is
entered.
If you are driving or parking in
“bobtail,” double-check the parking
light located on the dashboard to be
sure parking brakes are indicated as
being released.

Mode - Trailer Air
Released

This mode will allow you the ability to turn off the two (2) red LEDs on the Trailer
Air Supply Switch when driving “bobtail”. All trailer parking and unparking
capabilities are still available in Bobtail Mode. Refer to the Premium Gauge
Cluster documentation for information on messages or alerts associated with
this feature.
To Enter Bobtail Mode:
•
The driver must press the yellow switch and release the tractor parking
brakes.
•
There should be no air delivered to the trailer and both red LEDs must
be lit on the red switch.
•
The driver must pull and hold the red Trailer Air Supply Switch for a
minimum of 1.0 second.
To Exit Bobtail Mode:
•
The red trailer switch is pressed or pulled.
•
The key is turned off.
•
There is a fault in the system.
•
The driver applies the trailer parking brakes.
•
The vehicle experiences a Rollaway Mitigation Event.

Limp Home Mode
In an emergency situation, such as when an interlock is faulted or reports
incorrect information and the driver cannot unpark the vehicle, the following
procedure can be used to unpark:
1. Verify the ignition is on.
2. Press and release the yellow tractor parking brake switch four (4) times,
then press a fifth time and hold it for about five (5) seconds. This step
must be completed in less than 20 seconds.
3. One (1) LED per switch will flash three (3) times per second to indicate
Limp Home Mode is active.
4. The vehicle can now be unparked. Press the yellow or red switch to
release the parking brakes.
All features related to the foot brake and doors will be disabled. The Anti-RollAway (ARA) Due to Ignition feature will still be available. To exit this mode, pull
the yellow and red parking switches to manually set the parking brakes. Refer
to the Premium Gauge Cluster documentation for information on messages or
alerts associated with this feature.
