DD13 and DD15 Gen 5 Engines

Described Condition, Symptoms, and Affected Vehicles

DDC would like to investigate certain fuel injectors used on DD13 and DD15 Gen 5 engines that trigger a
particular fault code. If an engine has more than 482800 km (300,000 mi) and displays fault codes SPN
3659-3664/FMI 3-6, follow the instructions in this letter. This process is only to be performed when the
customer approves of the additional repair time that may occur.

Troubleshooting

This should only be performed if one of the following fault codes is present:
SPN 3659 FMI 3,4,5, or 6
SPN 3660 FMI 3,4,5, or 6
SPN 3661 FMI 3,4,5, or 6
SPN 3662 FMI 3,4,5, or 6

SPN 3663 FMI 3,4,5, or 6

SPN 3664 FMI 3,4,5, or 6
Check as follows:

1.) Follow the troubleshooting instructions for the applicable amplifier circuit fault in the Gen 5 Platform Electronics and
Troubleshooting Manual.

2. _ Was the injector’s resistance found to be out of range on the troubleshooting procedure?

a. — Yes; go to step 3.

b. — No; follow the troubleshooting guidance in the manual and disregard this letter.

3. — Does the affected engine have over 482,800 km (300,000 mi) on it?

a. _ Yes; go to step 4.

4. | Replace all six fuel injectors and the needle retum control valve.

For DD15, see Removal of the Fuel Injector.

5. — Once the repair is completed, please return all six fuel injectors and the needle return pressure control valve directly to Detroit
Diesel.
