BACKGROUND
The current Power Control Unit (PCU) Radiator Guard does not provide adequate protection. Roadway debris can cause
damage to the PCU Radiator which may result in multiple warning lights, Malfunction Indicator Lights (MIL), and decreased
hybrid system performance. The warning lights and decreased hybrid system performance are associated with the
following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), all related to overheating of the Power Control Unit (PCU): P1D9A, P1F3C,
P0634, P0A3E, P0A3C, P0D32, P0CF1, P032F, and P0AE1.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this product update.
Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible. Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be
in your new or used vehicle inventory. Repair these vehicles before they are sold.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Perform a detailed inspection of the PCU Radiator Guard to confirm that the updated countermeasure guard is installed.
Examine the PCU Radiator for any indications of coolant leakage. If the vehicle is equipped with an older honeycomb style
guard, replace it with new horizontal countermeasure guard. If any leaks are identified on the PCU Radiator, replace both
the PCU Radiator and the PCU Radiator Guard.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
PCU Radiator Guard Inspection:
Look through the front bumper lower grille and inspect the guard mounted on the PCU Radiator.
• If the guard has a honeycomb design, proceed to PCU Radiator Inspection.

•

If the guard has a horizontal design, the inspection is complete. No further action is required.

PCU Radiator Inspection:

Lift the vehicle.
Remove the front bumper.
Pressurize the cooling system using a coolant pressure tester.
Visually inspect the PCU Radiator for coolant leaks due to damage from road debris.
Is the PCU Radiator leaking?
NO: Proceed to REPAIR PROCEDURE A.
YES: Proceed to REPAIR PROCEDURE B.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
Procedure A
NOTE: The installation of the counter measure PCU radiator guard is critical.
1. Remove the PCU Radiator Guard.
2. Install new countermeasure PCU Radiator Guard, making sure fitment is correct.

3. Reinstall all removed items in reverse order.

Procedure B
1. Attach coolant hose pilers onto the PCU Radiator coolant hoses.

2. Remove the PCU Radiator Guard, then the PCU Radiator.
3. Install the new PCU Radiator and the new PCU Radiator Guard.
NOTE: Installation of the counter measure PCU Radiator Guard is critical. (see Procedure A for instructions)
4. Reinstall all removed items in reverse order.
5. Lower vehicle, refill PCU Coolant Expansion Tank.
6. Connect the DCA-8000 Dynamic Diagnostic Charging System and set it to the Power Supply Mode.
7. Bleed the air from the PCU coolant with the i-HDS. Select the following menu buttons on the i-HDS screen in
sequence.
1. Electric Powertrain (System Selection Menu)
2. Adjustment
3. Coolant Air Bleeding
4. START
8. Pour coolant into expansion tank as needed when the level drops. If the coolant level keeps changing or bubbles are
seen after 10 minutes, continue to bleed the system until the coolant level stabilizes and there are no more bubbles.
NOTE: If the POWER SYSTEM indicator comes on, clear the DTC with the i-HDS, then bleed the system again.
9. After 10 minutes, press STOP.
10. Check the coolant level and add coolant as necessary until it is at the MAX mark, then install the expansion tank cap.

11. California residents only: Fill out a Vehicle Emissions Recall – Proof of Correction certificate, and use BNU as the
recall number. Have the service advisor give the certificate to your customer and advise him or her to keep it as
proof that the recall was completed. Your customer will need to submit this certificate to the DMV only if the DMV
requests it. If you need more certificates, use reorder number Y0657.
