IMPORTANT EXTENDED WARRANTY INFORMATION
Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2015-2017
Mercedes-Benz S-Class (222 and 217 platforms) vehicles, an erroneous activation of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (“MIL”) may occur under
certain conditions, due to engine coolant backflow. In our continuing efforts to assure the proper performance of Mercedes-Benz products and
to ensure the satisfaction of our customers, the warranty for the subject vehicles is extended from the original 4 years/50,000 miles to 10
years / 120,000 miles from the vehicle’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty start date for the coolant system when repairs are required that result
from a MIL due to engine coolant backflow. Under this extended warranty, the subject vehicles will be retrofitted with an engine coolant
system check-valve. The extended warranty is applicable to the following vehicles:

In the event of an illuminated MIL as a result of the conditions specified above, the following fault codes will be present:
ECU Fault Code: P012800
Subsequently, the following damage code will be used: 5030F22
Please check the VIN in NetStar/VMI before scheduling the appointment for the repair. Applicable vehicles will be visible in NetStar/VMI on
February 14, 2020.
Approximately one week after the distribution of this NCU, a letter will be sent to owners of certain vehicles informing them that the warranty
for the subject vehicles with a MIL resulting from engine coolant backflow will be extended from the original 4 years/50,000 miles to 10
years/120,000 miles. If customers have already paid to have a repair to address the MIL related to the conditions specified above, they
may be eligible for reimbursement. Please advise the customer to follow the instructions detailed below (also included in a copy of the
customer letter).

Reimbursement to Customers for Valid Repairs Performed Prior to Warranty Extension
Customers who have already paid to have a repair resulting from a MIL due to engine coolant backflow may be eligible to receive
reimbursement.
Requests for reimbursement may include parts, labor, fees and taxes.
Reimbursement may be limited to the amount the repair would have cost if completed by an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer.
The following documentation must be presented to the servicing or closest Mercedes-Benz dealership for reimbursement:
Original or clear copy of all receipts, invoices and/or repair orders that show:
• The name and address of the person who paid for the repair.
• The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the vehicle that was repaired.
• What problem occurred, what repair was done, when it was done and who repaired it. Please verify fault code P012800 is documented
in the prior repair history.
• The total cost of the repair expense that is being claimed.
• Proof of payment of repair (copy of front and back of cancelled check, or copy of credit card receipt).
Reimbursement will be paid by a check from an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer.

Retrofit check valve in coolant hose at the additional engine cooler

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that on
certain Model Year (“MY”) 2015-2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (222 and 217 platforms) vehicles, an
erroneous activation of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (“MIL”) may occur under certain conditions, due to
engine coolant backflow. In our continuing efforts to assure the proper performance of Mercedes-Benz
products and to ensure the satisfaction of our customers, the warranty for the subject vehicles is
extended from the original 4 years/50,000 miles to 10 years / 120,000 miles from the vehicle’s New
Vehicle Limited Warranty start date for the coolant system when repairs are required that result from a
MIL due to engine coolant backflow. Under this extended warranty, the subject vehicles will be retrofitted
with an engine coolant system check-valve.

Prior to performing this extended warranty:
•

Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the extended warranty and if it has been
previously repaired. Always Check VMI for any open extended warranty, and perform accordingly.

•

Please review the entire extended warranty bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as
described.

This bulletin has been created and maintained in accordance with MBUSA-SLP S423QH001, Document and Data
Control, and MBUSA-SLP S424HH001, Control of Quality Records.

Procedure

1. Remove front and mid engine compartment cover (AR61.20-P-1105LF).
2. Remove inside fender inside the front fender (AR88.10-P-1300LF).
3. Disconnect coolant hose at the marked area (A, Figure 1).

4. Disconnect coolant hose at junction (B, Figure 1).
Collect leaking coolant in a clean and suitable container.
The coolant must be captured and reused.

5. Cut the protective cover (1, Figure 2) by approx. 40 mm and remove it all around.
Do not damage the coolant hose.

6. Insert check valve by approx. 30 mm into the hose.
Use silicone spray for the assembly.
Mind the direction of assembly of the check valve (Figure 3). The star (C) of the check valve has to be
visible after the assembly.

7. Fill in the collected coolant (Figure 4).

8. Check the engine cooling system for leakage.
