Black Exhaust Tip Repair Procedure

This bulletin outlines the refinishing procedure for restoring the black coating on exhaust tips
affected by peeling or flaking paint. This validated process is intended to avoid unnecessary
replacement of the entire exhaust silencer assembly.

Affected Models (All Model Years)
- Quattroporte (M156), Ghibli (M157), and Levante (M161) – with black exhaust finish
- MC20 Coupé/Cielo (M240/M241) – with black exhaust finish
- Grecale (M182) – with black exhaust finish

- Peeling or flaking black paint on one or more exhaust tips
- No structural damage or corrosion—only surface coating degradation

Important: if any exhaust tip is experiencing peeling, is it mandatory to repaint all of
them to avoid color mismatch.

Required Material
- Black Exhaust Spray Can – P/N 673017403.
Due to the specific curing requirements of the I760 thermoceramic coating—requiring controlled
oven baking at 180°C (356°F) for 30 minutes it is recommended that this refinishing procedure be
sublet to a qualified body shop equipped with appropriate curing facilities. This ensures proper
adhesion, finish quality, and long-term durability of the repair.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Safety Warning:
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during sanding and spray painting
operations. This includes protective eyewear, gloves, and a respirator or mask suitable for paint
fumes and particulate matter. Ensure the work area is well-ventilated and free of open flames or
ignition sources.
Preliminary Steps
1. If threadlocker is present: Refer to 00.AB.065 - Cleaning Table for Threaded Elements before
removing bolts.
2. Interior Protection: Apply coverings per 00.AA.005 - Internal Vehicle Protections.
Disassembly & Surface Prep
3. Remove the rear silencer: Follow 01.81.059 - Rear Exhaust Silencer Removal/Refit.
4. Clean each tip thoroughly using isopropyl alcohol or acetone, then wipe or blow off excess solvent.

5. Sand the affected area using P80 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to edges fully expose the
substrate in areas where paint is peeling. The result should be as shown below. Repeat sanding for
the second tip and blow off any dust.

7. Mask off all areas that should not be painted. Prepare a well-ventilated and clean environment
for paint application.

Refinishing Procedure

8. Shake the can vigorously for at least 2 minutes, holding it upside down.
9. Test spray on a metal surface to get a feel for the spray pattern and pressure.
10. Apply a thick, even coat to fully cover the surface. Ensure the finish appears wet and uniform.

11. Cure the painted parts in an oven for 30 minutes at 180°C (356°F).

Important:
This procedure utilizes I760 thermoceramic spray paint, applied from a canister. It is not a powder
coating process. The curing step is necessary to properly set the thermoceramic layer and achieve
optimal durability under high-temperature exhaust conditions.
Curing the I760 thermoceramic coating must be performed in a temperature-controlled oven at
180°C (356°F) for 30 minutes. This step is mandatory to ensure proper adhesion, durability, and heat
resistance of the coating. Do not use a heat gun or other localized heat source, as it will not
provide the consistent temperature required for effective curing.

The final result should match the appearance shown in the reference image above.
