Customer states:
+ Coolant loss/leak.
+ Coolant warning lamp.
+ Engine warning lamp on.
Workshop findings:

+ The coolant pump is found to be the source of the leak.
+ DTC P0299 is logged in the engine control unit.
DTC “P0299: Turbo/Super Charger Underboost” may be logged when changeover valve N649 is impaired
by coolant entering. This can result in functional restrictions in the vacuum system.
Documentation is required.
Technical Background
To avoid repeat repairs or incorrect repairs, make sure to locate the leak precisely. Ensure that the coolant level has
not dropped due to insufficient bleeding (e.g. due to a previous repair).
Note:
1) Traces of coolant (small quantity) on drip cup (refer to Figure 1).
Asmall amount of coolant may possibly leak into the leak reservoir due to lubrication/cooling. This is designated as
a cosmetic leak and does not constitute a reason for complaint.

2) Dried deposits on vacuum connection are not a clear indication of a leak (see Figure 2).

Service
Try to reproduce the customer complaint (based on the description/cause of the issue), so that it can be
clearly assigned to this TSB. The following repair must only be carried out if all the criteria (model/type,
chassis number, engine/motor, gearbox code, PR number(s), part number, software version, code, etc.)
apply exactly. Otherwise, this solution will not eliminate the problem and repeat repairs may be
necessary. In such a case, the warranty claim may be rejected, and the cost of the parts may be charged
back.

Please assess the leak using the following steps:
1. Check the vacuum line and valve N649 (Checkpoint 1, Figure 3) for traces of coolant. Disconnect them to do
so.
a. If traces of coolant are visible, replace the mechanical coolant pump and follow steps 6b and 7.
b. No traces of coolant are visible, follow step 2.
2. Clean and dry the leak and traces of coolant thoroughly.
3. Fill the cooling system to max.
4. Perform a visual check; assess whether there may be a leak at idling speeds and at higher engine speeds of
approx. 2500 rpm.
5. Check the cooling system for leaks according to the workshop manual, see ELSA.
6. Reassess the suspected leak.
a. If no coolant leak could be detected during the test, it is recommended to further observe the vehicle. It is
not necessary to replace any parts.
b. If a coolant leak can be detected: replace the component causing the damage and document leaks with
photo/video. If the coolant pump is evidently leaking, also photograph the production date as shown in Figure
4.

7. Checking the vacuum system:

a. The leak in the coolant pump could contaminate other components of the vacuum system with coolant.
Check systematically and document inspection of checkpoints 2 and 3 (Figure 3) for coolant residue. If
fresh coolant is found, replace the contaminated components, (for example, as labeled in figure 3: the
entire vacuum line, item 1: N545, item 11: coolant shut-off valve, item 6: vacuum reservoir, etc.) Note:
please view attachment ea839_vacuum_system.pdf for precise overview of the different vacuum
systems.

Checkpoint 3: Vacuum distributor in area of vacuum pump.
b. If no coolant residue is visible in checkpoints 2 to 3, replace valve N649 and clean only the vacuum line
between the coolant pump and valve N649 using compressed air.
