CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT AND
ENGINE INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT (SC176Y)

 NOTICE
This bulletin has been revised to include additional information. New/revised sections of this
bulletin are indicated by a black bar in the margin area.
This bulletin provides catalytic converter and engine sub-assembly diagnosis and repair information on
certain 2012-2016MY Soul (AM, PS) vehicles produced from July 8, 2011 through August 11, 2016, that
previously had the recall campaign SC176 completed. The affected vehicles may exhibit catalyst system
efficiency deterioration or a malfunction indicator lamp illumination with an active, history or pending P0420
with or without a P030X misfire DTC. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to inspect and, if
necessary, replace the catalytic converter and engine sub-assembly on the applicable vehicle. Before
conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
DTC Description:
P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301: Cylinder 1-Misfire detected
P0302: Cylinder 2-Misfire detected
P0303: Cylinder 3-Misfire detected
P0304 Cylinder 4-Misfire detected

There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair.

Coverage Inquiry → Campaign Information). Not completed Recall / Service Action reports are

Replacement Procedure: (Catalytic Converter)
1.

Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

2.

Replace the catalytic converter (A) by referring
to “Engine Mechanical System → Intake and
Exhaust System → Exhaust Manifold → Repair
procedures” in the applicable Shop Manual on
KGIS.

Tightening torque for catalytic converter
bolts:
21.7 – 30.4 lb.ft (29.4 – 41.2 N.m)

3.

Reinstall all removed parts in reverse order of removal.

4.

Confirm normal operation.
