Condition
Intermittent event memory entries in various control units (e.g. engine control unit, airbag control unit, gearbox
control unit, instrument cluster, gateway, onboard supply control unit, convenience control unit, control unit for
headlight range control, etc.)
Technical Background
Damaged contacts caused by preceding tests (through-flow check, etc.).
Using unsuitable measuring tips during the tests can widen the contact, thereby damaging it (stretching the contact).
Production Solution
This problem cannot occur during production. It is only an issue in the workshop.
Service
Procedure for 0.63 mm contacts
Before any further tests, the contacts on the respective control unit connector must be checked physically.
The test described applies to 0.63 mm contact sockets (which are the usual contacts used for the control units listed
above), but can also be applied to other contact sockets (with the appropriate test contact).
The 0.63 mm contact pin (See Figure 1) is required for the test (part number: 000979007, 000979012 or
000979017). Make sure the test contact is kept straight during the test. It must be possible to insert the test contact
into the contact socket on the control unit connector as though it is being drawn in.
Repair damaged plug contacts using repair kit VAS 1978.

Procedure for nano contacts
How are nano contacts recognised?
Three possible distinguishing features:
1. The appearance of the mechanism to unlock the contacts in the housing:
a. The right side in Figure 2 shows the position of the nano contacts on a 56-pin engine control unit connector.
b. The left side in Figure 2 shows the location of the mechanism to unlock the contacts.
The contacts can be removed with VAS 1978/35-3.

2. Via a part number search:
The suggested repair wire for nano contacts is always described as a 0.5 mm flat contact in the Electronic parts
catalogue ETKA (see arrows in Figure 3).

3. Via the appearance of the contact:
Figure 4 shows a picture of nano contacts.

Properties: nano contacts have a chamber size of 0.4 mm x 0.5 mm (chamber is not square).

Checking nano contacts:
Measuring wire V.A.G 1594/51 is available as a supplement to auxiliary measuring set V.A.G. 1594D.
Physically checking these contacts is only possible using the V.A.G 1594/51.
In the event of a complaint, use the test box VAS 6606 suggested in Guided Fault Finding and test adapter 6606/25
for electrical tests (resistance, voltage and current consumption), or measuring wire V.A.G 1594/51.

Nano contacts can only physically be checked using V.A.G 1594/51. Checking nano contacts using 0.63 mm
contacts will only damage the contacts and lead to additional complaints.
