Customer states:

* — The vehicle cannot be switched from transmission position “P” to transmission position “D” or “R” or switches
from transmission position “D” or “R” back to transmission position “P” automatically.

Workshop findings:

* No event memory entry is logged in the airbag control unit.

Technical Background

In the case of very light drivers who are not wearing a seat belt, shifts in weight can cause the driver to no longer
exert enough pressure on the seat occupied sensor (in the center of the foam of the driver’s seat). As a result, the
driver is no longer detected by the sensor. For safety reasons, this causes the vehicle to switch from transmission
position “D’ or “R” back into transmission position “P”.

This vehicle is equipped with the leaving concept which detects the driver on the seat and authenticates them. This
enables the driver to activate the ignition by pressing the brake without having to press the start/stop button (applies
only to e-tron models). The seat occupied recognition, or the seat belt being fastened, and in all cases the driver
door also being closed are the factors used to determine whether transmission position “D” or “R” can be selected.
Selecting transmission position “D” or “R” is always possible when the driver is wearing their seat belt.
The leaving concept also must prevent the vehicle from rolling away when a driver is not detected. If the driver is not
wearing a seat belt and is not recognized due to low weight, the vehicle immediately switches back to transmission
position “P” when transmission position “R’” or “D” is selected. The seat occupied recognition system is designed to
ignore people who are too light / objects that are too light, such as children or bags on the driver’s seat. This is
necessary due to the ease with which the leaving concept enables the vehicle to be ready to drive.

Production Solution
Not applicable.

Service

If the driver’s seat belt is fastened, the seat belt recognition is more highly prioritized than the seat occupied
recognition. Therefore, the driver’s door should always be closed, and their seat belt always fastened when driving.

Replacing the seat occupied sensor is not the solution to this complaint if no event memory entries clearly relating to
the seat occupied sensor are present.

There is no reason to replace parts or attempt repairs. Unjustified work/replacement parts will be charged back.
Invoicing under warranty is not permitted.
