TriPac 3 units are now approved for installation on 24-volt Volvo VNL Series and Mack Class 8
sleeper trucks. This addendum has been added to the TriPac 3 Installation Manual.
Important:
This addendum applies exclusively to TriPac 3 units being installed on 24-volt Volvo VNL Series
and Mack Class 8 sleeper trucks.
Procedure:
24–volt Supplemental Installation Instructions for Volvo VNL Series and Mack Class 8 Sleepers
Note: If the truck is equipped with a factory diesel-fired heater, the heater must be left connected, or it will trigger
truck alarm codes.
Note: If the truck is equipped with a factory diesel-fired heater, the APU must be configured as cool-only.
Note: Volvo recommends connecting smaller 12 VDC accessories to the CMEC (Chassis Mounted Electrical
Center). Thermo King does not recommend connecting the APU to the CMEC fuse panel because the 12 VDC
bodybuilder fuse is only 150A. Thermo King recommends using the supplied fuse holder and fuse to connect
directly to the 12 VDC battery post as detailed in these instructions.
Note: If the truck is equipped with remote start, Thermo King advises not to use it in conjunction with the APU.
Instead, allow the APU to run and maintain the truck cabin temperatures, charge the batteries, and warm the
engine coolant (if open loop kit is installed). If using Auto Start/Stop with the built-in truck parking cooler, verify
the APU SENSE_V_1 is set to a minimum of 12.2 VDC.
1. Attach the APU negative harness to the truck chassis terminal, normally located on the frame rail behind the
battery tray as shown below.
- DO NOT attach the APU negative harness to battery negative. This is to avoid bypassing the Volvo negative
battery to chassis fuse.

2. Connect the fuse holder and the voltage sensing wire to the +12 VDC terminal point on the truck battery pack
as shown below.
- The RED power harnesses indicates +12 VDC; the YELLOW power harnesses indicates +24 VDC.
Important: Only connect to the RED +12 VDC battery power connection. DO NOT connect to YELLOW +24
VDC battery connection!
3. The connection point for the APU chassis ignition signal connection is located behind the panel on the
passenger side of the dash. The connection is made at the BBEC5A connector, Pin 3. The mating connector
and pin are commercially available:
