Customers report erratic warnings for assistance system functions associated with corner radar sensors. For
example, Lane Change Assist (LCA) lights up or Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) warns of an approaching vehicle,
without a vehicle nearby.
Technicians may find signs of paintwork or repairs to the front or rear bumper covers, especially in the area of a
corner radar sensor.

Technical Background
Paint thickness limitations are essential to allow accurate operation of radar transceivers behind the bumper covers.
The subject condition can occur because of improper repair or painting procedures to the bumper cover in the area
of the assistance system radar sensors. The condition can also occur due to protective film or stickers applied in the
area of the assistance system sensors.

Service Information
Ensure vehicle software pertaining to assistance system functionality is fully updated via Integration test.
Ensure no protective film or decals are applied around assistance system sensors.
Ensure corner radar sensor wiring is correctly routed (for example, wiring is not routed between the radar sensor and
the bumper cover).
If the condition occurs in a vehicle with updated software and no visible film or decals, the bumper cover paint
thickness should be checked using a paint thickness gauge designed for painted plastic components (e.g., DeFelsko
PosiTector 200).
This tool shall also be used to measure paint thickness after painting to ensure the paint thickness complies with the
values published in the workshop manual.
Refer to the workshop manual and paint manual for specifications and procedures. For example, 6355IN Instructions for painting rear apron (vehicles with Lane Change Assist) (Figure 1).
