Introduction
Some 2020 – 2023 model year Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles may exhibit a condition
in which the Power Back Door (PBD) will not open or close and/or stops moving while opening or
closing. A modified PBD unit assembly is available to address these conditions. Please follow the
Repair Procedure in this bulletin to address this condition.

APPLICABLE WARRANTY
• This repair is covered under the Toyota Basic Warranty. This warranty is in effect for
36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.

Repair Procedure
1. Confirm the condition exists.
Does the door a) stop operating while opening and closing or b) does NOT open OR close?
•
If a) — Go to step 4.
•
If b) — Continue to step 2.
2. Confirm the PBD is turned ON.
A. In the meter settings display, navigate to the PBD System Settings and
ensure the system is set to ENABLE.
B. Once enabled, continue to step 3.

3. Confirm PBD switch operation.
A. Inspect the No. 1 power back door control switch.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
• 2020 – 2023 Highlander and Highlander HV

B. Inspect the power back door control switch.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

Do BOTH switches meet the specified conditions?
•
YES — Continue to step 4.
•
NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable
Repair Manual.
4. Confirm jam protection activation.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

5. Replace BOTH the left and right-hand side actuators.
NOTE
It is necessary to replace BOTH the left and right-hand side actuators.
A. Remove the left-hand and right-hand side actuators.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
• 2020 – 2023 Highlander and Highlander HV

B. Replace the NEW left-hand and right-hand side actuators

6. Initialize the PBD by fully closing the door by hand.

7. Confirm normal operation of the PBD.
