Luxfer Gas Cylinders Type 4 CNG and H2 Product Lines

Topic: Shipment of Type 4 Cylinders Under Pressure
Effective December 1, 2025, all Luxfer Type 4 CNG and Hydrogen products will be
shipped with approximately 20 PSI of internal pressure. This internal pressure must
be maintained while the cylinder is stored prior to installation. Failure to maintain the
internal pressure may void any manufacturer’s warranty. Cylinders will be filled with
either compressed air or nitrogen, depending on the specific application.

What This Means for You
Luxfer Type 4 CNG and Hydrogen products will be received with a small amount of
internal pressure. This pressure is below any hazardous shipping criteria and will not
cause cylinders to require hazardous shipping. Customers need to be aware of the
internal pressure and take any necessary precautions for handling and de-pressurizing
cylinders prior to installation.
To facilitate safe handling and depressurization, each cylinder will be equipped with a
standard Schrader style valve (similar to the valve on vehicle and bicycle tires) and a
corresponding plug. The valve and plug are consumable items provided for
convenience to vent the cylinder prior to installation or use.
The plug will be either an aluminum plug with 1.5-inch wrench flats or a plastic plug,
also with 1.5-inch flats, depending on the specific product application. Please refer to
the photos below for examples.

Procedure For Cylinder Depressurization
As with any Schrader style valve, depressing the pin in the center of the valve will allow
any internal pressure to bleed to atmosphere., With the pin depressed and while
pressure is being bled, it will create an audible “hissing” sound.

Warning: Venting a cylinder in a confined area can lead to personal injury or
death from asphyxia. Always vent internal pressure in a well-ventilated area or
outside of any building.
Either a specific tool for releasing pressure from a Schrader style valve, a filling adapter,
or mating fitting can be used to bleed the cylinder of shipping pressure. When using a
filling adapter, hold the adapter at a 45° angle against the check valve to successfully
depressurize, as shown below.

To allow the internal pressure to bleed into the atmosphere, the pin in the center of the
Schrader valve must be depressed. The pin is shown in the image below.

Once the pin has been depressed and the audible hiss has ceased, the internal
pressure must be verified before attempting to remove the valve and plug.
Warning: Attempting to remove plug and valve while the cylinder is under
pressure can lead to personal injury. Never attempt to remove valve and plug
without removing internal pressure first.
Use a pressure gauge to ensure the cylinder has been fully bled. An example is shown
below.

A 1.5-inch wrench can be used to remove the plug once bleeding has completed and
the cylinder has been verified to be empty using a pressure gauge.

Venting Procedures: When venting the cylinder, please ensure to do so in a
safe and appropriate manner following any applicable laws or codes that have
jurisdiction.
