Summary

MCIeBay logo noticed that some customers operating in severe duty environments were experiencing the exterior U-Joints of the lower steering shaft binding due to corrosion. Because of this, MCIeBay logo has developed a new re-greaseable U-Joint service kit (NF PN: 6505981) to replace the existing greased for life U-Joint on lower steering shafts. Rework instruction and preventive maintenance guide are provided below. Following this procedure and preventive maintenance will increase the life of MCIeBay logo lower steering shafts.

Greaseable U-Joint Service Kit for Lower Steering Shaft

APPLICABILITY:

MCIeBay logo Coaches from 2024 - Present

MCIeBay logo noticed that some customers operating in severe duty environments were experiencing the exterior
U-Joints of the lower steering shaft binding due to corrosion. Because of this, MCIeBay logo has developed a new
re-greaseable U-Joint service kit (NF PN: 6505981) to replace the existing greased for life U-Joint on lower
steering shafts. Rework instruction and preventive maintenance guide are provided below. Following this
procedure and preventive maintenance will increase the life of MCIeBay logo lower steering shafts.
Equipment for Rework
1. U-Joint Service Kit – NF PN: 6505981
2. 2x 17mm Wrench
3. Torque Wrench
4. 17mm Socket

Rework Instructions
1. Turn the steering wheel to ensure there is enough clearance to achieve access to both sets of nuts and
bolts either side of the existing U-Joint.

2. Using one of the 17mm wrenche secure the bolt and hold in position; using the other 17mm wrench
apply counterclockwise torque to the nyloc nut to unscrew the nut from the bolt. Once complete,
remove the bolt from the U-Joint.

3. Remove the existing U-Joint from the steering gear.
Widening the pinch-bolt slot will help with removal, wedge
slot with flathead screwdriver or chisel tip. Ensure no
damage to the mating shaft

UJ may be tight on serration, a hammer may be used to
remove the UJ from the steering gear.

support shaft prior to removal to prevent damage

4. As with step 2, use a 17mm wrench to secure the bolt and using the other 17mm wrench turn the nut
counterclockwise to loosen, then remove the nut and bolt from the existing U-Joint assembly.

5. Remove the existing U-Joint from the shaft end and discard as per local recycling regulations.

UJ may be tight on serration, a hammer may be
used to remove the UJ from the steering gear.

Ensure no damage to the mating shaft.

6. Unscrew nuts and bolts from the new U-Joint service kit (NF PN: 6505981) and set aside. If required, to
aid assembly, apply grease to internal female serrations and external male serrations.

7. Assemble the new U-Joint service kit onto the shaft ensuring the grease nipple is accessible.

Ensure proper alignment of bolt flat
to bolt hole and full shaft
engagement. Otherwise, assembly
will not be possible.

8. Using the (previously removed) nuts and bolts supplied with the new U-Joint service kit assemble
through the U-Joint pinch bolt hole and torque to 48/50 Nm using a torque wrench while securing the
bolt head.

9. Slide the other end of the U-Joint over the male spline on the steering gear. Using grease if required.

Ensure proper alignment of bolt flat
to bolt hole and full shaft
engagement. Otherwise, assembly
will not be possible.

10. Using the (previously removed) nuts and bolts supplied with the new U-Joint service kit assemble
through the U-Joint pinch bolt hole and torque to 48/50 Nm using a torque wrench while securing the
bolt head.

Preventive Maintenance Guide
1. The new U-Joint service kit has re-greaseable fittings for customers to perform preventive maintenance
on every 6,000 miles by purge lubricating through the grease fitting using Chevron Delo or equivalent
until fresh grease flows out of all four bearing cup seals.
2. If all bearing cups do not purge lubricate successfully, then it will be necessary to remove the steering
shaft from the vehicle and tap the opposite cap or rotate the adjacent yoke through its full range of
motion while applying grease.
3. Wipe off excess grease from U-Joint.

Trousse d’entretien de joint universel graissable pour arbre de direction inférieur

APPLICABILITÉ :

Autocars MCIeBay logo de 2024 à ce jour

Selon les observations de MCIeBay logo, certains clients qui conduisent dans des environnements de travail difficiles ont
constaté que les joints universels de l’arbre de direction inférieur étaient coincés à cause de la corrosion. Pour
cette raison, MCIeBay logo a mis au point une nouvelle trousse d’entretien de joint universel graissable à nouveau
(no de pièce NF : 6505981) pour remplacer le joint universel graissé à vie existant sur les arbres de direction
inférieurs. Les directives de reprise et le guide d’entretien préventif sont fournis ci-dessous. Le suivi de cette
procédure et de l’entretien préventif augmentera la durée de service des arbres de direction inférieurs MCIeBay logo.

Instructions de reprise
1. Tournez le volant pour vous assurer que le dégagement est suffisant pour accéder aux deux jeux
d’écrous et de boulons des deux côtés du joint universel existant.

2. À l’aide d’une clé de 17 mm, fixez le boulon et gardez-le en position; à l’aide de l’autre clé de 17 mm,
appliquez un couple dans le sens antihoraire à l’écrou nyloc pour desserrer l’écrou du boulon. Une fois
terminé, retirez le boulon du joint universel.

3. Retirez le joint universel existant de l’engrenage de direction.
L’élargissement de la fente du boulon de pincement facilitera
l’enlèvement; élargissez la fente avec un tournevis plat ou un
embout de ciseau. Assurez-vous que l’arbre d’accouplement
ne présente aucun dommage.

Le joint universel pourrait être serré sur la cannelure; un
marteau peut être utilisé pour retirer le joint universel de
l’engrenage de direction.
L’élargissement de la fente du boulon de pincement
facilitera l’enlèvement, élargissez la fente avec un
tournevis plat ou un embout de ciseau. Assurez-vous que
l’arbre d’accouplement ne présente aucun dommage.
L’arbre pourrait tomber après avoir été enlevé de
l’engrenage de direction, supportez l’arbre avant de
l’enlever pour prévenir les dommages.

4. Comme à l’étape 2, utilisez une clé de 17 mm pour fixer le boulon et à l’aide de l’autre clé de 17 mm,
tournez l’écrou dans le sens antihoraire pour le desserrer, puis retirez l’écrou et le boulon de l’ensemble
de joint universel existant.

5. Retirez le joint universel existant de l’extrémité de l’arbre et jetez-le conformément aux règlements de
recyclage locaux.

Le joint universel pourrait être serré sur la
cannelure; un marteau peut être utilisé pour retirer
le joint universel de l’engrenage de direction.
L’élargissement de la fente du boulon de
pincement facilitera l’enlèvement, élargissez la
fente avec un tournevis plat ou un embout de
ciseau. Assurez-vous que l’arbre d’accouplement
ne présente aucun dommage.
L’arbre pourrait tomber après avoir été enlevé de
l’engrenage de direction, supportez l’arbre avant
de l’enlever pour prévenir les dommages.

6. Dévissez les écrous et les boulons de la nouvelle trousse d’entretien de joint universel (n o de pièce
NF : 6505981) et gardez-les de côté. Si requis, pour faciliter l’assemblage, appliquez de la graisse sur
les cannelures femelles internes et les cannelures mâles externes.

7. Assemblez la nouvelle trousse d’entretien de joint universel sur l’arbre en vous assurant que l’embout
de graissage est accessible.

Vérifiez que le boulon plat et
le trou de boulon sont alignés
correctement et que l’arbre est
complètement enclenché. Sinon,
l’assemblage ne sera pas possible.

8. À l’aide des écrous (retirés précédemment) et des boulons fournis avec la nouvelle trousse d’entretien
de joint universel, assemblez à travers le trou de boulon de pincement de joint universel et serrez au
couple de 48/50 N·m avec une clé dynamométrique tout en fixant la tête du boulon.

9. Glissez l’autre extrémité du joint universel par-dessus la cannelure mâle sur l’engrenage de direction.
Utilisez de la graisse, si nécessaire.

Vérifiez que le boulon plat et le trou de
boulon sont alignés correctement et que
l’arbre est complètement enclenché.
Sinon, l’assemblage ne sera pas possible.

10. À l’aide des écrous (retirés précédemment) et des boulons fournis avec la nouvelle trousse d’entretien
de joint universel, assemblez à travers le trou de boulon de pincement de joint universel et serrez au
couple de 48/50 N·m avec une clé dynamométrique tout en fixant la tête du boulon.

Guide d’entretien préventif
1. La nouvelle trousse d’entretien de joint universel pour clients contient des raccords graissables à
nouveau afin d’effectuer un entretien préventif à tous les 6 000 milles en procédant à une lubrification
par purge au niveau du raccord graisseur à l’aide de graisse Chevron Delo ou l’équivalent jusqu’à ce
que de la graisse fraîche s’écoule par les quatre joints d’étanchéité des cuvettes de roulement.
2. Si la lubrification par la purge de toutes les cuvettes de roulement ne se déroule pas de façon efficace,
il faudra retirer l’arbre de direction du véhicule pour expulser le capuchon opposé ou tourner la fourche
adjacente sur toute sa plage tout en appliquant de la graisse.
3. Essuyez tout excès de graisse du joint universel.
