Condition
On some vehicles after prior engine repairs, you may find rough running and misfires on
bank 2, some or all cylinders.
Cause
We have found on several engines that this is caused by the timing gear on the
crankshaft for the left bank broken, or the timing chain broken or the crankshaft keyway
broken. This is usually caused because the harmonic balancer has been removed and
either the bolt wasn't replaced or the bolt was not torqued correctly. Removal of the
camshaft cover and turning the engine over by hand will show the condition.
Correction
The engine will need to be checked for bent valves and piston damage. The crankshaft must be checked for damage
to the keyway. If no further damage is found, the gear, chain and key should be replaced and when re-assembling
the engine, the old balancer bolt should be used to install the balancer and then the bolt removed and a new bolt
installed and torqued per specifications per SI.
