SIDE AIRBAG (SAB) INSPECTION AND
REPLACEMENT FOR DTC(S) B1380/B1384

 NOTICE
This bulletin has been revised to include additional information. New/revised sections of this
bulletin are indicated by a black bar in the margin area.
This bulletin provides information associated with the ‘Warranty Extension Program’ (WTY036) to diagnose
and repair certain airbag warning light 'ON' conditions on 2019-2020MY Optima (JFa) vehicles produced from
May 21, 2018 through June 23, 2020. The affected vehicles may exhibit an airbag warning light 'ON' with DTC
B1380 and/or B1384 due to the front seat Side Airbag (SAB) connector experiencing higher than normal
resistance. The warranty coverage for repairs related to the front seat SAB due to illumination of airbag
warning light has been extended to 15 years / unlimited miles, starting from the date the vehicle was first put
into service. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to inspect for DTCs. If either of the DTCs
identified below is present, reconnect the side airbag connector of the affected front seat. If the DTC(s) do not
clear after reconnecting, replace the applicable SAB on the applicable vehicle.
DTC Description:
B1380 – Side Airbag Front Driver Resistance Circuit Short to Ground (Left)
B1384 – Side Airbag Front Passenger Resistance Circuit Short to Ground (Right)

 NOTICE
A Technical Service Bulletin is a field fix repair program without customer notification that may be performed
during the warranty period. Any dealer requesting to perform this repair outside the warranty period will
require DPSM approval.

 IMPORTANT
A Vehicle Diagnosis Number (VDN) must be created for DTC’s B1380 and or B1384, prior to ordering
parts and performing necessary procedure(s), as outlined in this TSB. If a VDN is not created, Parts
Ordering and Warranty claim submission issues WILL occur.

Inspection Procedure:
1.

Confirm ‘Airbag’ warning indicator lamp is ‘ON’
and using KDS, scan for DTC(s):
TSB ‘Related’ DTC Description:
•

B1380 – Side Airbag Front Driver
Resistance Circuit Short to Ground

•

B1384 – Side Airbag Front Passenger
Resistance Circuit Short to Ground.

2a.

If the ‘related’ DTC is not present (other airbag concern) then this TSB is not applicable.
‘Inspection Only’ claim.

2b.

If the ‘related’ DTC is stored (Driver or Passenger, or both) proceed to step 3. A Vehicle Diagnosis
Number (VDN) must be created for DTC’s B1380 and or B1384.

3.

Detach the affected seat by referring to “Body
(Interior and Exterior) → Front Seat → Repair
procedures (steps” in the applicable Shop
Manual on KGIS.

4.

Disconnect the 12V battery negative (-) cable.

5.

Tilt the seat upwards from the rear.

6.

Disconnect and re-connect the yellow SAB
connector. Ensure it is securely clipped/locked.

7.

Lower the seat flat, reconnect the 12V battery
negative (-) terminal and turn the ignition to
the ‘ON’ position.

8.

Using KDS, scan the vehicle and confirm if the
previously stored DTC is still present:
•

No (OK) – Reinstall the seat in the
reverse order of removal. No further
action is required.

•

Yes (NG) – Proceed to the ‘Repair
Procedure’ on page 3 to replace the
affected SAB (Left, Right or Both).

Repair Procedure:
1.

Open the hood.

2.

Disconnect the 12V battery negative (-)
terminal.

3.

Remove the SAB module (Left and/or Right
Side, as applicable) by referring to “Restraint →
Airbag Module → Side Airbag (SAB) Module →
Repair procedures” in the applicable Shop
Manual on KGIS.

4.

Install a new Side Airbag (SAB) module.

Tightening torque for bolts:
4.4 – 5.9 lb.ft (6.0 – 8.0 N.m)

5.

Reinstall all removed parts in the reverse order
of removal.

4.

Using KDS, verify DTC is cleared and confirm
normal vehicle operation.
