Cable Lubrication Procedure
The following applies to all Sutphen aerials:
Cable lubrication is important when it comes to safety, function and maintenance of the
tower. When servicing the cables, the tower should be extended horizontally to maximum
position. At maximum position and at a comfortable working height. Inspect all cables for
wear and damage.
What to look for when inspecting cables ?
The below Best Practice has been identified for use by Team
Members to insure quality and field reliability.
NOTE: Cables should be lubricated with a thin film of LPS Chain Mate
or Crosby Vitalife 400 every 25 hours of aerial operation.

What should happen if cables are found to have some kind of damage?
The ladder will need to be placed Out Of Service immediately if any damage is found. The cables
must be replaced, adjusted to factory specifications and re-certified before put back into service.
Cables are to be replaced in pairs.
Moving forward, ATF/Dex Merc should no longer be used for lubricating your cables.

Cable Lubrication Procedure
How is the cable lubricant to be applied ?
•
Once cables are inspected, the cables need to be wiped free of any dirt and/or grime with a
slightly moist naphtha cloth.
•
Lubrication can be sprayed directly onto the cables all the way down the ladder.
NOTE: Cables should be lubricated with a thin film of LPS Chain Mate

Once lubrication has been sprayed onto the cables, lubrication should sit about 5 seconds to
soak completely into the cables.

After about 5 seconds a shop rag can be used to wrap around the cables and ran over the cables the whole length of the truck.

This will help clean any access lubrication, but also ensure the cables are properly lubricated.

Another acceptable way to lubricate the cables would simply be, spraying lubrication directly
onto a shop towel and then wrapping the towel around the cables and running the towel
down the cables multiple times ensuring that lubrication is applied through out the cables.
