Note: Indian Roadmaster PowerPlus Dark Horse w/PowerBand Audio model shown. This procedure
is applicable to Indian Challenger, Pursuit and Chieftain PowerPlus.
To change the oil and filter on your Indian Roadmaster PowerPlus, follow these steps:
1. The total amount of oil required for the oil and filter change is approximately 5 quarts (4.7 L).
Follow all instructions carefully and DO NOT overfill. The PowerPlus Oil Change Kit is part number
2884171.
2. Change the oil and filter when the engine is warm. If the engine is cold, start the engine and allow
it to run at idle for at least five minutes.
3. Begin by parking the motorcycle with the side stand down on a firm, level surface. If using a
service lift, the motorcycle should be centered.
4. Clean the area around the drain plug and place a drain pan under the drain plug. Tip: Placing a
rag in the bottom of the drain pan will help prevent the splashing of oil.
5. Remove the drain plug with a 6mm Hex Bit socket and allow the oil to drain completely. Note:
Remove the side stand bumper bracket with a 10mm socket for improved clearance to drain plug.
6. Install a new sealing washer and O-ring on the drain plug. The sealing surfaces on the drain plug
and engine should be clean and free of burrs, nicks or scratches.
7. Reinstall the drain plug and torque to 15 ft-lbs (20 Nm). If the side stand bracket was removed,
reinstall and torque the fastener to 84 in-lbs (9.5 Nm).
8. Continue by placing the oil pan beneath the oil filter. Use an oil filter wrench to turn the filter
counterclockwise to remove it.
9. Use a clean dry cloth to clean the filter sealing surface on the engine.
10. Lubricate the O-ring on the new filter with a film of fresh engine oil. Check to make sure the Oring is in good condition.
11. Install the new filter and rotate it clockwise by hand until the filter gasket contacts the sealing
surface, then turn it an additional 3/4 to one full turn. The oil filter is part number 2521421.
12. Remove the dipstick and add only 4 quarts (3.8 L) of the recommended oil at this step. DO NOT
overfill.

13. Reinstall the dipstick securely.
14. With the motorcycle in an upright, centered position, start the engine and let it idle for
approximately 30 seconds.
15. Stop the engine and add an additional 1 quart (0.95 L) of engine oil. Do NOT overfill. Overfilling
can result in loss of engine performance and an oil saturated air filter. Use a suction device to
remove excess oil if overfilled.
16. To ensure the oil level is within the safe operating range, recheck the oil level by:
Positioning the motorcycle in full upright, centered position.
Start the engine and allow it to idle for 30 seconds. Stop the engine.
Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean.
Thread the dipstick until fully seated.
Remove the dipstick and view the oil level. Note: If the oil level on the dipstick is anywhere in the safe range, do not add
oil. Oil should be added only if the proper oil check procedure is followed and the level is below the safe mark.

17. Dispose the used oil and filter properly at your local recycling center.
18. Reset the oil change life in the instrument gauge (vehicle settings > Oil Life/Service Reset). Note:
After an oil change, the low oil pressure indicator may illuminate when the engine is started. If this
occurs, do not increase the RPM above idle speed until the indicator turns off. Operating above the
idle speed could result in damage to the engine.
