2.0 Cummins Engine Block Ground

Purpose:

This bulletin provides information on making sure the dedicated ground from the battery negative to the engine
block ground stud remains installed when a powertrain harness is replaced. Service personnel have found
instances of this ground cable not being reconnected when a powertrain harness has been replaced, this
dedicated ground MUST be installed as it was when the vehicle left the factory. Failure to keep the dedicated
ground installed could lead to engine failure over time.

• All procedures outlined in the bulletin must be performed by skilled service personnel. Refer to the product
service manual for descriptions of maintenance procedures.

Perform your company’s Lockout/Tagout
procedure. If your company does not have a
Lockout/Tagout procedure, follow OSHA
1910.147 and 1910.146 Confined Space as
appropriate.

Use appropriate Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) as required by your
company.

Tools and Equipment Required
Customer to supply:
• Hand Tools
• Torque Wrench (foot pounds)

Procedure

Lockout/Tagout

1. Park vehicle on a flat level surface, block truck tires, and perform your company’s Lockout/Tagout procedure.
If your company does not have a Lockout/Tagout procedure, follow OSHA 1910.147 and 1910.146 Confined
Space as appropriate.
2. The vehicle’s BATTERY DISCONNECT switch is located on the left-hand side of the battery box. Use the
battery disconnect switch when performing any maintenance so the vehicle cannot accidentally be started.
a. Turn the battery disconnect switch (Figure A, Item 1) counterclockwise so the hole on the switch aligns
with the hole in the bracket (Figure A, Item 2).
b. Install the safety lockout device ring (Figure B, Item 1) through the holes on the battery disconnect switch
and the bracket.
c. Install a padlock (Figure B, Item 2) onto the safety lockout device ring, lock it, and put the key in your
pocket. If more than one person is working on the vehicle, each person must install his or her own padlock.

Engine Block Ground
3. Release left and right side rubber hood latches.
4. Raise engine hood.
5. Locate engine block ground stud on right-side. See Figure 1.
6. Make sure 6 gauge dedicated ground cable from battery negative to engine block ground stud is connected
to engine block ground stud. See Figure 1. If ground cable is connected to engine block ground stud go Step 10.
If ground cable is not connected to engine block ground stud go to Step 7.
7. Loosen and remove nut from engine block ground stud. See Figure 1.
8. Clean ring terminal on engine end of dedicated ground cable from battery negative and install on engine
block ground stud.
9. Reinstall nut removed in Step 7. Final tighten nut to 70 ft. lbs.

Close and secure hood.

11.

Remove lockout/tag and wheel chocks.
