Issue: Some of the vehicles listed in the Model statement above may exhibit oil consumption and blue smoke from
the tailpipe. This may be due to the sealing process of the PCV baffle which is part of the valve cover assembly.
Action: For vehicles that meet all of the criteria in the Issue and Model statements, follow the Service Procedure to
replace the valve cover RH.

Service Procedure
1. Verify the production build date of the valve cover RH. Refer to Figures 1 and 2 for 3.5L engines and Figures 3 and
4 for 3.3L engines.
NOTE: The harness shown in Figure 2 needs to be slightly pushed aside to view the entire date.
NOTE: Date displayed on valve cover will show as: 12/09/2024 or 12/10/2024.

2. Is the valve cover build date between 09-Dec-2024 and 10-Dec-2024?
(1). Yes - proceed to Step 3.
(2). No - this article does not apply. For further diagnostics, refer to WSM, Section 303-00 > Diagnosis and
Testing.
3. Replace the Valve Cover RH. Refer to WSM, Section 303-01.
NOTE: Do not reinstall the upper intake manifold at this time.
4. Remove the throttle body. Discard the throttle body gasket. Refer to WSM, Section 303-04.
5. For Explorer vehicles, remove the MAPT sensor. For Transit vehicles, remove the MAP sensor. Refer to WSM,
Section 303-14.
6. Use the Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner to thoroughly clean the inside of the upper intake manifold. Spray
the cleaner into all upper intake manifold ports to maximize cleaning effectiveness.
7. Apply the Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner to a clean shop towel and carefully wipe the inside of the throttle
body.
NOTE: Do not spray the Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner directly into the throttle body.
8. Use compressed air to dry the upper intake manifold and throttle body.
9. Reinstall the throttle body and MAPT/ MAP sensor. Refer to WSM, Section 303-04 and Section 303-14.
10. Reinstall the upper intake manifold. Refer to WSM, Section 303-01.
11. Check engine oil level and add engine oil as needed. Refer to Owner´s Manual.

12. Perform a 10 mile (16 km) road test to verify symptom has been resolved. If the symptom is still present, refer to
the WSM and perform normal diagnostics outside of this article.
NOTE: If the spark plugs require replacement, repair as needed outside of the article.
