Concerns:

Intermediate steering shaft

Symptom:

Customers complain about disturbing noises coming from the footwell area on the driver side while steering.

Cause:

The surface of the foam rubber seal in the sealing sleeves starts to wear and crumble due to high temperatures . This effect causes the reported noise.

Remedial
Action:

In the event of a customer complaint on a vehicle that:
•

was produced before the date of introduction: Replace the existing intermediate steering shaft with a
new, modified intermediate steering shaft with felt ring, see Workshop Manual ⇒ Workshop Manual
'482819 Remove and install intermediate steering shaft'.

•

was produced after the date of introduction or was already replaced by the new type of intermediate
steering shaft (with felt ring): To remove intermediate steering shaft, see Workshop Manual ⇒
Workshop Manual '482819 Remove and install intermediate steering shaft' and rework using a
temperature-resistant lubricant spray as described in the "Work Procedure" section.

Information
Lubricating steering shaft seals (inside and outside)
•

The intermediate steering shaft has two blue sealing rings, which must be lubricated separately because
the lubricant cannot flow effectively from one sealing ring to the other ⇒ Fig. 1. Left - passenger
compartment side, right - engine compartment side.

•

Lubricate each sealing ring separately and hold the shaft vertically while doing this.

•

First lubricate the upper sealing ring, then turn the shaft over and lubricate the lower sealing ring.

•

The two rings are visible in the assembly overview shown in Figure 2.

•

Both rings are identical. The ring on the passenger compartment side is cut away for clarity. Note the
felt insulator in between ⇒ Fig. 2.

Lubricate steering shaft seals.
2.1

Lubricate blue sealing ring, making sure that both contact surfaces (to the shaft and to the
green sealing ring) are lubricated ⇒ Fig. 3.

2.2

Move bulkhead seal up and down to distribute the lubricant.

2.3

Turn the seal around the shaft to distribute the lubricant.

Turn the intermediate steering shaft over and repeat the lubrication process for the other blue
sealing ring.
