Issue
Symptom:
Complaint of engine noise, which is a knock (combustion clatter or pinging), during or after snap throttle and while returning to idle or low idle speed.
Root Cause:
An audible fuel knock noise is a result of incomplete fueling adaption learning and is not an indication of a malfunction.
As the vehicle is driven, the engine control module (ECM) will learn the injector characteristics and adjust fueling variables.
Verification
Verify no other fault codes or symptoms are present.
Verify engine noise complaint during engine acceleration, deceleration, or returning to idle. Do not idle for extended periods of time; excessive idle time can cause
poor engine performance.
Verify the unit does not have previous fuel knock history (do not repeat this procedure).
Resolution
Connect to the ECM with the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent.
Cylinder cut out test to determine which cylinder/injectors is malfunctioning, usually one injector makes an audible difference.
While still connected to electronic service tool, carry out an Injector Performance Test and upload .CSV file to EDS session. Refer to Procedure 014-014 in Section
14. (/qs3/pubsys2/xml/en/procedures/583/583-014-014.html)
Perform an injector reset on the suspect injector using the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent. See L9 CM2450 L126B Service Manual,
Bulletin 5613077. Refer to Procedure 006-026 in Section 6 (/qs3/pubsys2/xml/en/procedures/583/583-006-026.html).
If noise is still present, perform a diagnostic road test, utilize a route that incorporates both stop and go city type driving and steady state highway type driving.
Motoring events are recommended in the route, as they help the injectors adjust. Allow for cooling time after road test to verify solution.
If engine noise is still present, continue with published troubleshooting
