AWD/4WD COUPLING ACTUATOR REPLACEMENT (CA2503)

This bulletin provides information related to the Technical Service Bulletin previously published under ELE374,
titled ‘Service Action: AWD Coupling Actuator Logic Improvement (SA605)’. If the affected vehicles experience
a loss of AWD capability (FWD continues to operate but there is no power sent to the rear wheels)
accompanied by a warning message on the instrument cluster “Check AWD/4WD System” and the
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated with DTCs P195800 and P196000 stored AFTER the AWD
Coupling Actuator Logic Improvement has been installed per ELE374/SA605, follow the instructions outlined
in this publication to replace the AWD Coupling Actuator on the applicable vehicle.
DTC Description:
P195800 – AWD-Torque Error
P196000 – AWD-Bleeding Pressure Error

 NOTICE
A Technical Service Bulletin is a field fix repair program without customer notification that may be
performed during the warranty period.
This bulletin should only be performed with a valid customer complaint of (1) inoperative AWD
capability, (2) warning message “Check AWD/4WD System” on the instrument cluster and/or (3) the
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) with a related DTC stored.
Repair status for a VIN is provided on KDealer+ (Service → Warranty Coverage → Warranty
Coverage Inquiry. If TRA114/CA2503 is complete, any subsequent or follow up concerns need to be
addressed under the terms of Kia's Basic Limited Warranty Coverage.

Repair Procedure:
BEFORE PERFORMING THIS TSB:
Customer complaint of (1) inoperative AWD capability, (2) warning message “Check AWD/4WD
System” on the instrument cluster and/or (3) the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) with a related
DTC stored MUST be stated in the opening RO and Claim Notes.
1.

Remove

the

Coupling

Assembly

(A)

by

referring to “All Wheel Drive (AWD) System →
Coupling Assembly → Direct Electro Hydraulic
Coupling → Removal and Installation” in the
applicable Shop Manual on KGIS.

Tightening torque for coupling bolts:
42.0 – 47.7 lb.ft (56.9 – 64.7 N.m)

TECH TIP
Mark the front transfer assembly and
propeller shaft mounting position
before removing the mounting bolts
(B).

Tightening torque for propeller shaft bolts:
36.2 – 50.6 lb.ft (49.0 – 68.6 N.m)

TECH TIP
Mark the rear tube rubber coupling
and the rear differential companion
mounting position before removing
the mounting bolts (B).

SUBJECT:

CAUTION
DO NOT tilt the AWD/4WD coupling
assembly on its side or remove the
actuator with the coupling assembly
installed on the vehicle as the existing
oil may leak out.

2.

Using an air gun, clean the exterior area of the
AWD/4WD Coupling Actuator (C) to prevent
any

dust/debris

entering

the

coupling

assembly before dissassembly.

3.

Loosen the four (4) bolts to remove the
AWD/4WD Coupling Actuator (C).
Tightening torque for coupling actuator
bolts:
7.2 – 8.7 lb.ft (9.8 – 11.8 N.m)

SUBJECT:

4a.

To avoid oil spillage from the actuator
mounting area, press down on the air breather
valve (D) to drain the accumulated oil back into
the coupling assembly (A) housing.

 NOTICE
Drain the remaining oil from the
coupling actuator (B) to the inside of
the coupling assembly (A) as much as
possible (roughly 5 – 10 seconds).

4b.

To install the ‘new’ AWD/4WD Coupling
Actuator (C) onto coupling assembly (A), slowly
turn the actuator side to side while applying
downward pressure.
Note: Lightly lubricate the O-ring prior to
installating the new actuator.

5a.

Apply a small amount of high-pressure grease
to the spline hole (D) before installing the
Coupling Assembly (A).
Note: Be careful not to damage the oil seal
(E) when reinstalling the Coupling Assembly
(A).

5b.

Reinstall all removed parts in reverse order of
removal.
Note: Install ‘new’ mounting bolts (B) when
reinstalling the propeller shaft.

 IMPORTANT
DO NOT reuse the ‘old’ removed
propeller shaft mounting bolts (B).
Match the marks made on the front
and rear of the propeller shaft done in
step 1 before tightening the bolt when
installing.

Tightening torque for propeller shaft bolts:
36.2 – 50.6 lb.ft (49.0 – 68.6 N.m)

6.

Using the KDS 2.0, perform the ‘Clutch
Learning

Reset’

by

referring

to

‘Expert

Diagnosis → S/W Management → 4WD-4WD
Control → Clutch Learning Reset’.

Confirm normal vehicle operation.
