SITUATION
Brake “groaning” noises heard at the rear axle at slow speeds, i.e. close to standstill, stop and go driving;
when parking or maneuvering.

CAUSE
After the braking process to a standstill with low brake pressure, with/without activated Automatic Hold
function, at continued constant brake pressure; a “groaning” noise from the rear brake may be acoustically
noticeable after a certain period of time (~1 second).
The change in drive torque at a standstill – automatic idling during vehicle standstill and with actuated
service brake (release at standstill) – causes relative movement between brake disc and brake pad, which
can subsequently be heard as a groaning noise (tension release of the components after torque shutdown).
Depending on the condition and temperature of the brake components, the groaning noises can vary in
intensity and severity.
The complaint occurs primarily in the following environmental conditions:

Cold brake system
Poor weather conditions, e.g., rain, water, snow, damp brake system due to conveyor car
washes
Increased probability of occurrence in the cold, damp season at slow speeds close to standstill

CORRECTION
No further repair measures are required:

The groaning noises listed above are normal characteristics for the vehicles listed in this
situation. A repair order for a customer complaint on these noises should be notated “No
problem found; vehicle operating as designed.” A copy of this bulletin may be provided to a
customer to help explain the situation.
There is no material defect in terms of the warranty
The noise is not a technical fault and has no effect on the durability of the affected components
Because the groaning noise is normal, there is no fix that can be applied to remedy the
customer’s complaint
The longer the vehicle is operated under normal driving conditions (urban driving, driving on
rural roads or motorways), the brake system will naturally heat up under use, which will

significantly improve/reduce the noise
