PIC6604 Scrapping Noise From Steering Wheel - Column

Customer may comment on a scrapping type of noise coming
from the steering or steering column area.
Technicians may comment that the steering column lower trim
cover is contacting the back side of the steering wheel.

Cause

Possible turn signal switch housing mis-aligned.

Correction:
The dealer should verify that the noise is coming from the steering wheel area.
If the noise has been confirmed to be from this area, inspect the steering column covers
for making contact with the back of the steering wheel assembly.
See example images below.

If the above condition is found, the dealer will need to remove the upper and lower
steering column covers per SI repair instructions.
Once removed, inspect the ignition switch housing mounting tabs for the column covers,
for damage.
If damage is found, replace the damaged/broken part.
If no damage is found, the dealer will need to loosen the turn signal housing clamp and
slide the housing down the column 1-2 mm.

Next, re-install the lower steering wheel cover but do not tighten the fasteners completely.

Pushing downward on the lower cover, torque the RH fastener, then the LH and finally the
lower fastener.
Install the upper cover and inspect the alignment.
