Technical background
Software updates must be applied to update the vehicles Baseline Software.
1. An update must be performed to take the vehicle from BiL 5.1 to BiL 5.2.
2. An additional update must be performed to take the vehicle from BiL 5.2 to BiL 5.2.1.
CAUTION
Please ensure that you read through ALL of the steps prior to starting the update.
– It is imperative that you understand the SVM Update Process BEFORE starting the update.
– Please also ensure that all the FAQ’s are understood, as this will support you during the update process.

Q: When I run a Guided Fault Finding Sweep, I have a pop-up that asks me to ‘Check installation list’
A: If the pop-up looks like the below image, simply click ‘close’

Q: I received error related to being unable to download the flash data container
A: Select the option that states “Repeat loading of flash data container”
Q: There is the DTC B20000 stored in Diagnostic Address 0075?
A: Navigate to Special Functions and select ‘SVM – Pre 372BIL5201 Hotfix Routines’. Then, run select the option that says ‘0075 ConBox – Fix
DTC B20000 (RSTP_Encryption_Error) and allow the test to complete.
Q: There are DTCs relating to improper control module shutdown in the ABS and Rear Wheel Steering states Terminal 30 Open?
A: Allow the vehicle to perform a CAN-BUS sleep for 30 minutes. Start a new ODIS-S session and perform Guided Fault Finding and then clear
faults. If the faults are still present, inform Product Support via DISS.
Q: There are warnings in the Drivers Instrument Panel relating to Transmission?
A: This appears when the 12v Battery is disconnected. It should clear immediately. If it does not, allow the vehicle to perform a CAN-BUS sleep
for 30 minutes. Start a new ODIS-S session and perform Guided Fault Finding and then clear faults. If the faults are still present, inform Product
Support via DISS.

Q: I have received a “VIN cannot be read error”. What do I do?
A: Perform a 5 minute CAN-BUS sleep. If you encountered this error during/after an SVM update, re-run the SVM update. If you still receive the
error, please update the existing DISS query with relative information regarding the fault.

Technical background
Software updates must be applied to update the vehicles Baseline Software.
1. An update must be performed to take the vehicle from BiL 5.1 to BiL 5.2.

CAUTION
Please ensure that you read through ALL of the steps prior to starting the update.
– It is imperative that you understand the SVM Update Process BEFORE starting the update.
– Please also ensure that all the FAQ’s are understood, as this will support you during the update process.
Check
If the vehicle is not already listed as repaired in “Repair history" (in Elsa pro), check for the presence of the yellow paint completion mark as
shown within the ‘Identification’ section.
If neither are evident, please conduct the instructions within the ‘Work’ section to completion.
Control
NOTICE
Once you have submitted the DISS query, you DO NOT need to wait for confirmation from Product Support to begin the BiL
5.2 update. You DO need to wait for confirmation to begin the BiL 5.2.1 update.
The following must be completed BEFORE starting any updates:
1. Guided Fault Finding of the vehicle must be completed BEFORE any updates are performed.
a. If a ‘Check Installation List’ pop-up appears, select ‘close’ (see below image)
b.
2. A FULL TECHNICAL DISS query must be submitted:
a. Customer Statement: “BiL 5.2 and 5.2.1 Update Support”
b. Workshop Findings: “BiL 5.2 Update Started”
3. After the BiL 5.2 SVM Update is completed, inline with the ‘Work’ section, you must update the DISS Query with the following:
a. “BiL 5.2 Complete. Please confirm if the BiL 5.2.1 Update can begin.”
b. You will receive confirmation that you can start the BiL 5.2.1 update. After receiving confirmation, follow the correct section of this TPI.
4. After the BiL 5.2.1 SVM Update is completed, inline with the ‘Work’ section, you must update the DISS Query with the following:
a. “BiL 5.2.1 Complete. Please confirm completion.”
5. Once you receive confirmation via DISS that both BiL updates are complete, the DISS query can be closed and the vehicle can be released
to the customer.

CAUTION
Before conducting the onward instructions, the operative MUST recheck the communication method in ODIS and ensure
that DoIP is selected before proceeding. Within ODIS-S, perform the following:
– On the right hand side, select the “Admin” tile (Within ‘Operating modes’)
– Select “GFF sequence” (Within ‘General information’ section)
– Under the “Selection of Communication path” drop-down menu, select “Only permit DoIP communication”.
CAUTION
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, ATTEMPT TO CONDUCT THE SOFTWARE UPDATE VIA THE CAN NETWORK.
ONLY DoIP SHOULD BE USED WHEN PERFORMING THE SVM UPDATE.

Preparation for BiL Updates – Required Files for Update
Firstly, you will need to download the required files from Atheer to perform the local software updates.
Visit https://bentley.atheer.io/ and log in with the following case-sensitive account details.

NOTICE
If you are already logged into your retailer account, you will need to logout first.
– To do this, click on your account initials (bottom left corner) and click “Sign Out”

After logging in, using the navigation bar on the left hand side, click on the ‘conversations’ tab
In here, you will find 2 separate downloads. You will need to download all of them. To do so, left click the appropriate file name.
•
1x file named “Kombi Files.zip”
•
1x file named “NAR ONLY BiL 5.2 and 5.2.1 Update.zip”
BIL 5.1 to 5.2 update download instructions.pdf may be downloaded to assist you further.
After left-clicking the files to download them, the download will take circa 5-10 minutes, do not interrupt this process. You may need to wait a
short period (internet speed dependent) for the files to download.
During/before the download commences, there may be a warning about a "pop-up" being blocked which will prevent the file from downloading,
ensure to select option "Allow Pop-Ups from this website" to download the file. Wording may differ depending on web browser.
Locate the download file and extract it. To do this, right click the file, click “7 zip” and then “Extract here”
After successfully downloading the file, please logout of the account.
CAUTION
Failing to structure your files correctly will result in the update failing.

Extract the contents of the “NAR ONLY BiL 5.2 and 5.2.1 Update.zip” folders to the c:/temp drive on the ODIS machine. The file structure
should be similar, not identical, to the below:

Extract the contents of the “Kombi files.zip” folder to a blank USB-C stick. The file structure should be identical to the below:
Preparation for BiL Updates - Battery Charger
CAUTION
ONLY Chargers that meet the approved specification on the Mandatory Equipment List (available on the Bentley
Hub)
MUST be used.
– The charger must be set to a mode where a MINIMUM of 90a is supplied to the battery during the process. Typically, this
is known as ‘Power Supply Mode’ or ‘DIAG+ Mode’.
– A voltage of exactly 14.8v must be set and maintained throughout the process.
– Please refer to the manual to ensure that these requirements are met before beginning any SVM update.
Preparation for BiL 5.2 Update
Conduct a full guided fault find of the vehicle.
If a ‘Check Installation List’ pop-up appears, select ‘close’ (see below image)
Referring to TPI 2075920, address any unknown faults BEFORE conducting any of the below updates.
Before proceeding, a FULL TECHNICAL DISS QUERY must now be raised with the full guided fault finding log attached.

12v Battery Replacement
CAUTION
The Battery Specification, which can be found on the top of the physical battery, MUST BE EXACTLY of the below
specification
– Software – 0960
– Hardware – H04
WARNING
New 12v Batteries are delivered in an open relay state. This means that you will need to use an approved charger
(documented in the “Preparation for BiL 5.2 Update - Battery Charger” section) and apply a voltage through the terminals
to open the relays within the battery. To do this, please refer to the manual of your battery charger.
Referring to ElsaPro Repair Group 27 – “Battery – to remove and fit”, replace the 12v Battery.
Before installing the new battery, make a note of the last 10 digits of the serial number on from the new battery . You will need to input this
number on ODIS-S.
When adapting the new Battery via ODIS-S:
•
Battery Manufacturer = ‘Other’, then ‘BYD
’.
After replacing the 12v battery, please ensure you re-activate the 48v system.
Kombi USB-C Update
The software which you have downloaded from Atheer must be loaded onto a blank USB-C stick as instructed within the “Preparation for BiL 5.2
Update – Required Files for ODIS” Section.
Check Software Level
1. Select the CAR OPTIONS screen on the Kombi.
2. Press and hold the “shoehorn” button n the steering wheel for 10 seconds. (Fig 1)

3. Select “Version Information” (The software level should be 0457 (Fig 2))

NOTICE
If the software level is 0458, you may skip this section and proceed to “Updating the High Voltage Battery and Battery
Junction Box” section of the document.
Installing Kombi Software
1. On the Multi Media Interface (MMI), hold down the top right of the screen with 2 fingers (Fig 3)

2. Once the screen goes black, remove your fingers and let the screen flip/fold.
3. Hold down the volume button for 30 seconds to enter the update screen.
4. Select “Update” (Fig 4)

5. When the MMI says “Waiting for devices”, insert the USB-C device into one of the USB-C sockets found underneath the centre console
armrest.
6. Select the file that appears on the screen.
7. Scroll down to “Start Update”
8. The screen may go black and also may close during the update. Do not interfere with the screen and allow the update to complete.
9. Once the update is complete, scroll to the bottom of the screen and select “Resume”.
10. The MMI will now exit the update screen.
11. You may need to hold down the volume button for 30 seconds to make the display visible again.
NOTICE
Following the “Check Software Level” section, check that the Kombi software is now at “0458”.
High Voltage Battery and High Voltage Battery
Junction Box Update
WARNING
Hybrid
Vehicles use a High Voltage System and therefore MUST ONLY be work on by a HVT or HVE trained personnel.
– During the High Voltage Battery
Update, the system required de-energisation and re-energisation. This will be performed
within the below test plan.
– Follow the on-screen test plan and ensure you are of suitable qualification to perform this step.
Please ensure all guidelines within the repair manual are strictly followed before and whilst conducting any work on vehicles with a High voltage
system
Before proceeding, the required files must be in the c:/temp drive of the machine completing the update. Please refer to the previous
“Preparation for BiL 5.2 Update – Required Files for Update” section and ensure the downloaded files and in the correct location/structure
before proceeding.
Before proceeding, the “Preparation for BiL 5.2 Update” section must have been completed.
1. In ODIS-S, navigate to the “Special Functions” tab.
2. Select “Pre_BIL5201_HV_Battery_Update” and then select “Perform Test”
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to completion.
4. You may get a status message: “Request could not be sent”. This can be ignored (press continue)
ESC Update
1. In ODIS-S, navigate to the “Special Functions” tab.
2. Select “Pre_372BIL5201_Hotfix_Routines” and then select “Perform Test”
3. Select Option 3, ‘0003 Brakes – Flash from 0131 to 0141’ (Fig 5)

4. If there is an error during the update, follow the on-screen instructions and repeat the update.
5. Once the test plan has completed, select “Exit”.
Software Level Verification
After completing the High Voltage Battery
, High Voltage Battery Junction Box and ESC updates, you will need to verify the software level of 2x
ECUs. The Battery Management Control Unit, and the Battery Junction Box.
1. From the Control Units List, find address 008C.
2. Right click the ECU 008C.
3. Select “Guided Functions” and then “Read Identification Data” (Fig 6)

4. This screen will present you with the identification data for the Hybrid
Battery Management control unit. The software part number version
should be 0200 (Fig 7).

5. Continue with the program and read the relevant subsystems and ensure this too is at software version 0200. (Fig 8)

6. If after reading the identification data of the subsystems presents a screen that is similar to Fig 9, please manually identify the control unit
06D0 (Fig 10) and attempt to read the Identification Data again.

7. If you are still unable to identify the control unit, do not continue with steps 7a and 7b until you have completed the next section “Manual
Identification of BJB Control Module”.
7a. If you can successfully identify the control unit, refer back to the start of the “Software Level Verification” Section to read the identification
data of the ECU and Subsystems, ensuring that the Software Level is 0200.
7b. If you are still unable to identify the Control Unit/read Identification Data after following the Manual Identification of BJB Control Module
section, DO NOT CONTINUE. Instead, inform Product Support that the control unit is not being identified and await next steps.
Manual Identification of BJB Control Module
If you are still unable to identify the control unit, you must perform the following:
1. From the Control Unit List, right click address 008C and select “Identify Control Unit”
2. Right click address 008C and select “Guided Functions” and then run the Read Identification Data test plan. (Fig 6)
3. If the identification data shows no data, select “Exit Diagnosis” and click “Yes” (Fig 11)

4. When prompted if you would like to continue guided fault finding, select “No”.
5. When prompted “Should a new test plan be created”, select “Yes”
6. Follow steps 1 and 2 to re-read the identification data of address 008C.
BiL 5.2 SVM Code Input
CAUTION
The initial run-through of the SVM update may take up to 4 hours. The ODIS-S terminal must be periodically checked every
10 minutes. Therefore, it is recommended to start this update in the morning/early afternoon.
CAUTION
It is imperative that before this stage of the update is started, the correct battery charger is connected to the vehicle.
Please refer to the “Preparation for BiL 5.2 Update - Battery Charger” section.
CAUTION
You MUST ONLY use the Diagnosis Interface VAS 6154 (WiFi Diagnostic Tool) in USB OPERATION or the CABLECONNECTED VAS 5055 for the reprogramming (updating) of the control units.
– If neither of these units are available, the VAS 5054 (A) may be used in USB MODE.
– DO NOT under any circumstances use a Bluetooth connection to conduct the reprogramming (updating) of any control
units.
CAUTION
During the update, switch off all unnecessary consumers. For example, ventilation, seat heaters, interior illumination,
exterior lights etc.
CAUTION
After entering an SVM code, the vehicle will perform a full vehicle check which may take more than 30 minutes. Therefore,
please ensure that the below code is 100% correct before proceeding.
Begin Update
WARNING
De-energise the high-voltage system via ODIS-S. Refer to ElsaPro, Repair Group 93 – “De-energising high-voltage system”
to do so.
1. After de-energisation, Select the Special Functions tab.
2. Navigate to ‘SVM – Code input’ and enter the SVM code: 372BIL5201 and select “Adopt”.
3.On the next screen, ensure that the SVM code is correct.
4. You will be shown the communication type. This MUST be set to “DoIP”.
4a. If “DoIP” is not selected, select option 3 until the communication type is set to “DoIP”.
5. After ensuring DoIP is selected, select Option 1 – “Yes”.
5a. From here, all control modules will be interrogated and the SVM action will take place.
6. Ensure that the diagnostic device remains connected for the duration of the update.
7. Follow all on-screen prompts until the program ends.
7a. You may be required to perform various ignition cycles during the test so ensure that you are situated around the vehicle/ODIS-S device for
the full update.
8. When the program has completed, you should receive a notification that states: “The configuration of the following control module(s) has been
changed or checked according to the list below (step by step in 551196896 Service42 requests).”
8a. If you receive any other codes, please refer to the FAQ section of the document before proceeding and update the existing DISS query
stating the encountered error code, ensuring that the latest GFF log is also submitted online
WARNING
Re-energise the high-voltage system via ODIS-S. Refer to ElsaPro, Repair Group 93 – “Re-energising high-voltage system”
to do so.
9. After completion of the update and re-energisation, perform the following:
9a. Turn off the ignition.
9b. Remove all equipment from the car. (Diagnostic tester/dongle, battery charger, keys).
9c. Close all doors, windows, bonnet and boot lid.
9d. Lock the vehicle and allow the vehicle to perform a CAN-BUS sleep (wait 30 minutes)
10. After 30 minutes, unlock and open the drivers door. Turn on the ignition, re-connect the battery charger and diagnostic dongle.
11. Re-run guided fault finding and clear DTCs. If any errors are present, please refer to the FAQ section of the document.
Post BiL 5.2 Update Quality Checks and DISS Confirmation
1. Referring to TPI 2075920, clear all DTC’s and recheck for stored DTCs. If any errors are present, please refer to the FAQ section of the
document.
2. Connect the high voltage charger to the vehicle.
3. On the instrument cluster, ensure the green charging symbol is displayed.
4. Attempt to start the vehicle both in ‘Bentley
’ and ‘Sport’ mode.
4a. Ensure that the engine does not crank/start whilst the charger is connected.
4b. Ensure that the message on the Drivers Instrument Panel is displayed stating that engine start is prohibited whilst the charger is connected.
5. Take the vehicle on a brief road test to ensure complete operation and no faults.
6. If no faults are present and operation is ok, use the existing DISS query that you raised t send the query back to Product Support with the
statement:
6a. “BiL 5.2 Complete. Please confirm if the BiL 5.2.1 Update can begin.”
7. If any non-sporadic faults listed in TPI 2075920 are present, or you are able to start the vehicle with the charger connected, please stop and
add the information with supporting evidence to the DISS query.
Preparation Work for BiL 5.2.1 Update
CAUTION
Before proceeding, you must receive confirmation via DISS that the vehicle has successfully updated to BiL 5.2 and the
vehicle is ready to be updated to BiL 5.2.1.
CAUTION
It is imperative that before this stage of the update is started, the correct battery charger is connected to the vehicle.
Please refer to the “Preparation for BiL 5.2 Update - Battery Charger” section.
CAUTION
During the update, switch off all unnecessary consumers. For example, ventilation, seat heaters, interior illumination,
exterior lights etc.
CAUTION

BiL 5.2.1 SVM Code Input
CAUTION
After entering an SVM code, the vehicle will perform a full vehicle check which may take more than 30 minutes. Therefore,
please ensure that the code is 100% correct before proceeding.
1. Select the Special Functions tab
a. Select ‘SVM – Pre 372BIL5201 Hotfix Routines’
b. Select ‘Perform Test’
c. Select Option 7 – ‘NAR BIL5.2 ->5.2.1 Update’ and follow the onscreen instructions.
2. Once this update has completed, select option 9 to exit the menu.
3. Ensure that the control unit 008C is identified following the section “Manual Identification of BJB Control Module” found earlier in this
document.
4. Navigate to ‘SVM – Code input’ and enter the SVM code: 372BIL52102 and select “Adopt”.
5. On the next screen, ensure that the SVM code is correct.
6. You will be shown the communication type. This MUST be set to “DoIP”.
a. If “DoIP” is not selected, select option 3 until the communication type is set to “DoIP”.
7. After ensuring DoIP is selected, select Option 1 – “Yes”.
a. From here, all control modules will be interrogated and the SVM action will take place.
8. Ensure that the diagnostic device remains connected for the duration of the update.
9. Follow all on-screen prompts until the program ends.
a. You may be required to perform various ignition cycles during the test so ensure that you are situated around the vehicle/ODIS-S
device for the full update.
b. If you have a prompt stating there is no communication established with 00CC, select done/continue.
10. When the program has completed, you should receive a notification that states: “The configuration of the following control module(s) has
been changed or checked according to the list below (step by step in 551196896 Service42 requests).”
a. If you receive any other codes, please refer to the FAQ section of the document before proceeding and update the existing DISS
query stating the encountered error code, ensuring that the latest GFF log is also submitted online
11. After completion of the update, perform the following:
a. Turn off the ignition.
b. Remove all equipment from the car. (Diagnostic tester/dongle, battery charger, keys).

2. Connect the high voltage charger to the vehicle.
3. On the instrument cluster, ensure the green charging symbol is displayed.
4. Attempt to start the vehicle both in ‘Bentley
’ and ‘Sport’ mode.
4a. Ensure that the engine does not crank/start whilst the charger is connected.
4b. Ensure that the message on the Drivers Instrument Panel is displayed stating that engine start is prohibited whilst the charger is connected.
5. Take the vehicle on a brief road test to ensure complete operation and no faults.
6. If no faults are present and operation is ok, use the existing DISS query that you raised to send the query back to Product Support with the
statement:
6a. “BiL 5.2.1 Complete. Please confirm completion.”
7. If any non-sporadic faults listed in TPI 2075920 are present, or you are able to start the vehicle with the charger connected, please stop and
add the information with supporting evidence to the DISS query.
8. Remove the Emissions Exemption Sticker from the bonnet of the vehicle as well as the exemption letter in the glove box and discard both.
