conduct a road test

Service
CAUTION
Before any work is carried out on the vehicle. Refer to "Precautions - Passive restraint systems and components". Failure
to comply with the instructions could lead to inadvertent deployment of the air bag module
1) Referring to Rep.Gr 69 - Remove the driver's air bag
2) Referring to Figure 1 - Replace the Steering Wheel Contact Detection control unit (J1158)

3) Referring to Rep.Gr 69 - Refit the driver's air bag

Referring to Rep.Gr 27 - Fit a suitable battery charger

4) Using ODIS navigate to 0019 (Gateway) >Guided Functions>0019 Read Measured Values>Select ID>IDE12609 (Figure 2)

Select Starting update

Place hands (light grip) on the steering wheel at the various points as shown in Figure 3

Hint: For clarity / photographic purposes Figure 3 is shown without steering wheel protection fitted

Monitor the Sensor 2 and Sensor 3 values whilst holding the steering wheel at the points shown - The expected values are between
40 and 60 and No malfunction Detected

Hint: For clarity sensor 1 is not used
NOTICE
Sensor 2 and sensor 3 should recognise contact with the steering wheel and will show the values changing if the system is
working to specification
5) Erase all applicable DTC’s
NOTICE
If the values are between 40 and 60 No malfunction Detected and no warnings are evident within the DIP no further action
is required
However
In the event the issue is not resolved the operative should raise a DISS query requesting permission to replace the steering
wheel
