TT-25-002 EXHAUST BRAKE ADJUSTMENT USING DX3

OVERVIEW
This bulletin explains how to properly check and adjust the exhaust brake for 20162021MY Conventional and 2013-2020MY COE Hino trucks

SUBJECT VEHICLES
Certain 16MY-21MY Conventional Trucks equipped with a J08 engine or 13MY-20MY
Cab-Over Engine (COE) equipped with a J05 engine
NOTE: Refer to the appropriate Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) list to
determine vehicle eligibility.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN
- Read and understand all instructions and procedures before you begin the work.
- Read and follow all WARNINGS and NOTICES set forth in this publication. These
alerts help to avoid damage to components, serious personal injury, or both.
- Park the vehicle on a flat, level and solid surface.
- Place the gear shift lever in "Neutral" or "Park".
- Apply the parking brake firmly and confirm parking brake activation.
- Turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition switch.
- Always wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes.
- Place wheel chocks in front of and behind all the wheels to prevent the vehicle
from moving.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Start the truck and warm it to 140*F or more, once at the target temperature, turn the
engine off. The key should remain ON.
2. Open DX3, select Engine > Customization Tab > Engine DPR Deposit Volume
(parameter 534) > (Document Current Volume) then change to 2.5g/L > Write > Turn the
Ignition off for 60 Seconds > Click OK.

3. Turn the key on (Engine Off), Select Data Monitor and Active Test then select the
following parameters; Engine Coolant Temperature, Engine Speed, Injection Quantity
and Exhaust Brake Solenoid Valve

4. Click Active Test, locate Target RPM and double click. Type in 980 RPMs
Conventional or 1100 RPM’s for COE (but do not press the play button).
5. Start the truck and the DX3 monitor; verify the engine temp is above 140*F and then
press the flashing regen button on the dash (Engine RPMs stabilize at 980 Conventional
or 1100 for Cab Over), exhaust brake will display ON and note injection quantity for one
minute; document value.

6. After one minute, verify 980 or 1100 rpms is displayed in the specified value field and
click the play button for Active Test. Monitor injection quantity for one minute;
document value. The exhaust brake should turn off during active test.

7. Once values are documented, subtract the injection quantity value with the exhaust
brake on from the value with the exhaust brake off.
Example; 28.25 mm3 (exhaust brake on) – 14.90 mm3 (exhaust brake off) = 13.35
mm3
Standard Values: 11-15 mm3
Note: If any adjustments are necessary, stop monitor, press the accelerator pedal
momentarily to cancel regen. Make adjustments, start truck, press regen button
and continue with previous steps to verify adjustment.

8. Once adjustments are complete, press accelerator to stop regen, stop data monitor
and click ECU Customization. Change the soot level to value documented at the
beginning of this procedure and write the value. Turn the ignition off for 60 seconds.
Click OK.
9. Turn the ignition back on after 60 seconds, click New Diagnosis to end the DX
session. Click OK (Procedure Complete)
