Summary
Potential for slack adjuster failure on trailer air brakes. Failure observed when the self-adjusting actuator rod pulls out the boot. Failure has not prevented brakes from actuating but may cause the brakes to not release fully. Units re-worked to replace push rod on brake chambers with a shorter rod meeting axle manufacturer's specifications.
Air brake rework instructions.
1. Chock wheels
2. Release parking brake
3. Cage brakes using caging bolt and nut stored on brake chamber
Cage bolt storage location
Insert cage bolt and rotate
clockwise ¼ turn to engage
slot
4. Apply parking brake to release air pressure
5. Label air hoses as service or park
6. Remove air hoses from brake chamber making note of parking/service brake fitting
locations
7. Remove ½” and ¼” clevis pins

8. Unbolt and remove brake chamber

9. Remove clevis and thread jam nut farther onto threaded rod
10. Verify parking brake is fully caged, the threaded rod should measure 5.75” +/-.125
11. Mark threaded rod at 4-3/8” from chamber mounting surface and cut. (approximately 13/8” removed), cut threaded rod and clean threads.
12. Reinstall clevis making sure threaded rod has less than 1/8” sticking out of clevis and run
down jam nut
13. If needed because of a tight slack adjuster, remove snap ring, remove slack adjuster and
rotate the top forward and reinstall adjuster and snap ring.
14. Install chamber in top set of holes
15. Reconnect air lines
16. Turn 7/16” slack adjuster bolt to line up slack adjuster top large hole and clevis large hole
and install ½” clevis and cotter pins

17. Install ¼” clevis and cotter pins
18. Rotate tires to verify that there is no excessive drag on the brakes
19. Repeat process for 3 other brake chambers
20. Release parking brake and remove caging bolts and store them in the chamber slot
21. Apply and fully release service brake 20 times to allow automatic slack adjusters to finish
adjustment process
