Certain Volvo
VN (4) model trucks may experience accelerated battery drain due to continuous
power consumption by the Vehicle Master Control Unit (VMCU) and other modules. Depleted
batteries can lead to starting issues and trigger erroneous warning lamps and fault codes across
various truck modules. Follow the instructions below to replace the VMCU, verify the correct pin
location on the blue VMCU connector, use PTT to program the control modules, and replace the
battery sensors (if applicable).

Warranty Information
When claiming the campaign, the main labor operation 3650-03-02-03 will cover the
replacement and programming of the VMCU.
Labor code 1700-22-03-11 will cover all other module programming.
Labor code 3111-16-02-01 will cover the first battery sensor replacement and calibration.
Labor Code 1720-16-09-01 will cover additional battery sensor replacement and calibration.
If the campaign has already been completed on a truck, do not go back and replace battery
sensors.
This repair is covered by an authorized Service Program. Reimbursement is
obtained through the normal claim handling process.

Important Note!
Before starting any repairs ensure the batteries are fully charged. The truck must
not be connected to shore power while performing the repairs or programming.

Park the vehicle on a level surface.
Apply the parking brake.
Place the gear lever in neutral.

Connect to the truck using the latest version of Premium Tech Tool (PTT).
Ensure the use of the approved Vocom II box, USB cable, and 16 pin (Blue)connector.
Once connection to the trucks is established.
Navigate to the Programming Tab.
Run operation 1700-22-03-06 Accessory Kit.
Enter Accessory Kit number 85171320.
11. The accessory kit will prompt you to replace the VMCU with ordered replacement
module P/N 24767242.
Important Note!
The old control unit must remain connected until the parameters have been
read out before replacing it with the new one. Leave PTT connected to the
truck for the remaining steps.
12. Unlatch the fairing.

19. Turn off the Maintenance Disconnect Switch (MDS).

30. Loosen the screws.
31. Release the locks and pry up on the module simultaneously.
32. Remove the control module.
33. Locate the Blue VMCU connector.
34. Cut the tie cable.
35. Unlatch and slide the housing off the connector.

36. Once the cover has been removed from the connector.
a. If Pin 17 is populated with a wire no action is required, continue to step 40.
b. If Pin 17 is not populated with a wire, Continue to Step 37.
37. Remove the pin from cavity 13 by releasing the locking tab on the pin.
Important Note!
The locking tab must be pressed twice to remove the pin from the connector.
Press the locking tab on the pin and pull back on the wire, press the locking tab
again and finish pulling out the pin and wire.
38. Insert the pin removed from cavity 13 into cavity 17 ensuring it locks fully into place.
39. Install the cover into the connector.
40. Install a new cable tie.

41. Remove the battery insulator tab from the new module.
42. Install the new module, press down firmly making sure it is fully seated.

54. Turn on the (MDS) switch.
Important Note!
The truck will appear off until the new VMCU programming has completed. PTT
will auto connect to the truck after the MDS is turned to the on position.
• For trucks with a Push button Ignition this will be an automatic process.
• For truck that have a key ignition the switch should be turned to the
Acc position.
Important Note!
Before continuing with programming ensure the batteries are fully charged. If
needed connect a battery charger at this time. Refer to CBR-2404 for charging
information.
55. Continue performing operation 1700-22-03-06 to completion, which will complete the
programing the VMCU.
Important Note!
On certain trucks, the hazard lights may flash continuously after completing
the accessory kit. If this occurs, proceed with programming the remaining
modules, and the hazard lights will function as expected.
56. Under the programming tab.
57. Run operation 1700-08-03-39 Program Electronic Control Unit.
58. Click on the software package. This will program all the available control units
automatically.

Important Note!
Before continuing to the next step battery chargers and all other external
power sources MUST be disconnected from the truck.
Important Note!
Steps 59-65 are only required if your truck is equipped with battery sensors.
59. Decommission the low voltage system following impact operation 3100-09-01-06 Low
voltage system, Decommission.
60. Replace the battery sensors following impact operation 3111-16-02-01 Battery Sensor,
Replacement.
61. Commission the low voltage system following impact operation 3100-09-01-05 Low
voltage system, Commission.
62. Under the programming tab, run operation 1700-22-03-12 Replace Hardware, to
change the Battery Sensor part number in the CCIOM.
63. Click on the CCIOM and then Program button.
64. Once the CCIOM replace hardware has completed, the battery sensors will require
Calibration Only.

65. Under the Calibration tab, run operation 1700-08-03-33 Function Parameter Reset to
calibrate the battery sensors. Click on the battery sensor module and then click
continue. Once completed.
Important Note!
Per your configuration, vehicle may be equipped with 2 – 6 sensors. Ensure
when performing the function parameter reset the sensor modules must be
calibrated one at a time.
66. Under the programming tab.
67. Run operation 1700-22-03-02 System Time and Date.
68. Set vehicle time zone in the Instrument Cluster or the Infotainment touch screen
depending on the truck’s configuration. See steps below.
• Navigate to system settings.
• Date and time.
• Options.
• Edit time zone.
• Select proper time zone.
• Click OK.

Clear any DTC’s caused by programming.
In the Product Tab, refresh the product connection.
Ensure no active DTCs are present.
Install the battery cover.
Install the brackets.

80. Release the vehicle back into service.
Important Note!
If the flashers continue to flash after all programming is complete and will not
deactivate with the flasher switch, you will need to verify Pin 17 of the VMCU
blue connector is populated.
