POWER STEERING UPPER FILL HOSE RETROFIT
Description

This procedure replaces the power steering upper fill hose with one of the correct material.

Procedure:
1. Complete the Proterra approved Lockout/Tagout procedure to make the bus safe for work.
2. This procedure replaces the power steering tank upper fill hose. There are two methods of
accessing this hose for replacement.
3. If the bus has the new style headlamp assembly as shown in the following illustration, the
hose is best accessed by removing the Streetside headlamp assembly. Using a #2 Phillips
Screwdriver, remove the screws that secure the headlamp assembly to the bus. Remove the
headlamp assembly. Disconnect the headlamp harness and set the headlamp assembly
aside.

4. If the bus does not have the type of style of headlamps shown previously, the hose must be
accessed by removing the instrument panel.
5. Using a T-30 Torx Driver, remove the fasteners that secure the instrument panel to the bus.

6. Carefully lift the instrument panel from the dash and rotate it clockwise and allow it to rest on
the floor as shown in the following photograph.

7. Locate the top of the fill hose where it connects to the fill port. Using Spring Clamp Pliers,
slide the spring clamp away from the hose end.

8. The previous photograph shows the fill hose as seen from inside the bus with the Instrument
Panel removed. The following photograph shows the hose as accessed through the headlamp
opening.

9. Inspect the installed fill hose. If the hose is in good shape and has the factory markings shown
in the following photograph, it should not be replaced.

10. If the hose is correct, proceed to the end of this document and reassemble the bus.

11. If the hose requires replacement, proceed with the next instruction to replace the hose.
12. Working at the Streetside Front Bumper, locate the fill hose where it attaches to the power
steering tank.
Note: The bumper cover is flexible. Push down on the bumper cover for better access to the
spring clamp.

13. Using Spring Clamp Pliers, remove the clamp from the hose and tank.
14. Working inside the bus, using an 8mm Ratchet/Socket, remove the bolts on the reservoir
gromet plate.

15. Remove the old fill hose and the clamps.
16. Using an Approved Safety Knife, cut the new hose to match the length of the hose that was
removed. If the hose was damaged during removal and cannot be used to match the length,
cut the hose to 400mm in length. It may need to be cut to a shorter length for the final fit.
17. Install the reservoir gromet plate onto the new Hose (021520).
18. Using Spring Clamp Pliers, replace the hose with the new Hose (021520) using the Spring
Clamps that were removed earlier.
19. The Hose (021520) must be installed as shown in the following illustration. The Clamps must
be placed between the beads as shown. This is the required for each end of the hose.

20. Using an 8mm Ratchet/Socket, replace the reservoir gromet plate.
21. Using a Calibrated Torque Wrench with an 8mm Socket, torque the bolts to 53 inch
pounds.
22. Reconnect the Headlamp harness if the headlamp was removed to access the hose.
23. Reinstall the Streetside Headlamp if it was removed.
24. Reinstall the instrument panel if it was removed.
25. Remove the Lockout/Tagout devices and return the bus to service after verifying that no leaks
exist.
